"Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood -

Some members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood were openly gay, and the lyrics make some pretty graphic references to sexual acts. The line, "When you want to come" is a reference to orgasm.

This was banned by some UK radio stations for offensive lyrics, which helped make it a hit. In the US, the lyrics were not considered controversial, as they could be interpreted many different ways. Somehow, "When you want to suck to it" was ambivalent enough to keep it on US radio.

This was a huge hit in England, where it stayed on the UK charts for 48 weeks, 5 at #1. It got some help from the BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read, who refused to play it. This helped stir interest in the song and made it a cult favorite. Six months after the song hit #1, it climbed back to #2.

Three videos were made. The first, which MTV refused to play, was filled with extravagant homo-erotic images. MTV aired the third video, which showed the band performing at a show.

This was produced by Trevor Horn, who was a former member of Yes and the Buggles. When this song hit #1 in the UK the week of January 28, 1984, "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" by Yes was at #1 in the United States.

Horn produced that song as well, making him the only producer to score simultaneous #1s in the UK and US with songs by different artists. Other acts Horn produced include ABC, Godley & Creme, Paul McCartney, Seal, Simple Minds, Lisa Stansfield, Rod Stewart and Tatu.

When this was first released in the US, it went only to #67. It hit #10 when it was re-released a year later.

This was featured in the 2001 Ben Stiller movie Zoolander. In the movie, this song triggers a male model to carry out an assassination. It was also used in "Body Double," a 1984 suspense movie in which the lead character, a B-movie actor, performs a scene to the song, virtually a music video within the movie.

In 1999, a guy named R.D. Turner copyrighted the name Frankie Goes To Hollywood in the US, and began playing shows as the band. He claimed to be Davey Johnson, brother of lead singer Holly Johnson.

I like this song.

Funny, this song is not listed on any of the US TOP 100 songs for 1984, 1985 or 1986.  I would of thought it would have been?
