The Selection Bracketology:
- Last 30 years
- Only -air quotes-
- 18 to 49 demo (including a second life or run on TV Land, Nick at Night, etc.)
Before I got going on this with Eric et. al, I thought there needed to be some rules to try to take out the subjectivity, which is always impossible, and increase creativity. Whenever someone “thinks outside the box” and has complete freedom, you end up with a Yoko Ono album instead of the self imposed 2-piece band (i.e. The White Stripes) driving the creative process and delivering MUCH better results. That’s why I always add limits and rules, etc. It’s part of the job or “Kid Laws” as my old boss would say.
Anyway, on top of only shows from the last 30 years, I thought there needed to be “Regions” or categories. Simply doing it by decade would have just lead to crappy IMDB type lists. So we broke them down by relative type. Apples to apples until the cream rose to the top into a Final 4. Then I made up something called *Relative Pop-Culture Index or RPI
(See what I did there?) to help weigh some of the smaller “cultier” shows. Mid Majors need love too.
Lastly, after seeding with some other Q’ers, some research via websites, reviews and articles, I asked a few people I kinda-sorta know who actually write or produce TV shows for a last minute massaging of seeds and some input. It was interesting.
Is it perfect? No, not at all. Should there have been so many animated ones? Of course not, but I thought it would get the people going
and raise the debate to a different place and maybe new direction. Over the last 20 years the best animated series have had some of the highest sitcom RPI. So they got a region, even if the bottom half of it left out some shows in other categories in the overall field of 64. (i.e. Disney Shows. More on them later.) It’s the smaller conference automatic bid, if you will.
By all means chime in and, of course, excuse any oversight. There are bound to be some.
As always, talk amongst yourselves.
