Best Sitcoms Bracket: Gangs & Groups Region (Edited 04/04/13 03:06PM by marcus_nyce)
The Selection Bracketology:
- Last 30 years
- Only -air quotes- Sitcoms
- RPI*
- 18 to 49 demo (including a second life or run on TV Land, Nick at Night, etc.)

Before I got going on this with Eric et. al, I thought there needed to be some rules to try to take out the subjectivity, which is always impossible, and increase creativity. Whenever someone “thinks outside the box” and has complete freedom, you end up with a Yoko Ono album instead of the self imposed 2-piece band (i.e. The White Stripes) driving the creative process and delivering MUCH better results. That’s why I always add limits and rules, etc. It’s part of the job or “Kid Laws” as my old boss would say.

Anyway, on top of only shows from the last 30 years, I thought there needed to be “Regions” or categories. Simply doing it by decade would have just lead to crappy IMDB type lists. So we broke them down by relative type. Apples to apples until the cream rose to the top into a Final 4. Then I made up something called *Relative Pop-Culture Index or RPI (See what I did there?) to help weigh some of the smaller “cultier” shows. Mid Majors need love too.

Lastly, after seeding with some other Q’ers, some research via websites, reviews and articles, I asked a few people I kinda-sorta know who actually write or produce TV shows for a last minute massaging of seeds and some input. It was interesting.

Is it perfect? No, not at all. Should there have been so many animated ones? Of course not, but I thought it would get the people going and raise the debate to a different place and maybe new direction. Over the last 20 years the best animated series have had some of the highest sitcom RPI. So they got a region, even if the bottom half of it left out some shows in other categories in the overall field of 64. (i.e. Disney Shows. More on them later.) It’s the smaller conference automatic bid, if you will.

By all means chime in and, of course, excuse any oversight. There are bound to be some.

As always, talk amongst yourselves.

(Here's the "home version" .pdf of the entire field of 64.)

I'm with Leigh.. first I had to eliminate either Parks and Rec or 30 Rock right off the bat (best 1st round matchup of the tournament) and had to vote for Big Bang or How I Met Your Mother? ew

News Radio is my La Salle  for this.. Tough to see Sports Night lose the Play in Game to Murphy Brown

Uhh, I hate this one so much. Sex and the City against Newsradio.... the networks alone make them completely different animals. ugh.
I don't know what Party Down is.
I've only seen one ep of 30 rock and none of the other so I chose Alec Baldwin.
Don't watch either of #3 but have seen enough of BBT to know it's crap so I picked NPH who we all know is awesome.
Could've gone either way on Frasier/Murphy Brown.
I loved 3rd Rock, so I hate to go against it. another one where they are completely different animals. Crap matchup.

I haven't watched most of these shows.  I guess I got my fill of Sit-Coms years ago, and I just find them annoying, so you have the name I am most familiar with, rather than a show I actually watch.

3rd Rock & Sunny aren't different animals AT ALL. They ate the EXACT same show in the spectrum. A few younger guys, a blonde and an older man who are ridiculously over the top in their perception of society/reality. Same for 8 - 9 matchup., etc

A little surprised that M*A*S*H didn't make this bracket. But i guess like the basketball tourney, it isn't an exact science and the selection committee did they best they could.

Personally I believe that M*A*S*H should have been the number one seed in this bracket.

MASH ended in '83, so it was just outside the 30 year window. If not, it's easily a top 3 seed somehow. We had to draw the line somewhere. If I was older and remembered more shows we could do a 50-60-70's version of these polls too (as a prequel to the 80-90-2000's one here.)

I do respect  the selection process, but your own bracketology says that it should have made this bracket.

including a second life or run on TV Land, Nick at Night, etc

What's done is done, I am not angry about them not making it, I just believe it to be a major oversight. Go to TVland and see how many times they show M*A*S*H.

Either way, "apples to apples"...nope!

Also, maybe 4 people have even heard of Party Down but The League isn't here? 30 Rock, Community AND Parks and Rec? This feels like bias. Sex and the City (which I don't even think was a sitcom) but not Californication? Did I miss Family Matters? (I may have been the only one who thought that was funny though...) Will and Grace?!

Did you tell me where you got these choices from and how seeding was determined? Maybe I should read the links you posted... there's an idea, I know. shut up.

Valid points on selection process and SEX and the City just because it was in the Vulture article Eric based this on, so we let it slide and pumped it up. Will be an upset.

Yes completely hypocritical on the processes' part and subjective as hell. lol we sure fire this up again in say 6-7 months and have a new selection committee with different variables?

ModFam was, then it wasn't, then was, then wasn't then.... idk. Nobody pounded the table for it at the end. Was originally as high as 5 (maybe?) with PD in NIT and Community at 16... then all hell broke loose in the selection committee chamber and it just kept falling. lol

The 16 shows in the Vulture tournament were considered "automatic bids." Remember, this being a hoity toity New York publications, a lot of the criteria was inclusion was being different and groundbreaking. Those 16 were: Cheers, The Office, Arrested Development, South Park, Friends, The Golden Girls, Roseanne, Malcolm in the Middle, The Cosby Show, The Simpsons, Community, The Larry Sanders Show, Sex and the City, 30 Rock, Seinfeld, and Louie.

As I'm a Parks and Rec, there was no way it wasn't getting in. Couldn't tell you about Californication. Family Matters was a late scratch (but one I would've put it over Hanging with Mr. Cooper). Will and Grace was a goof. Sorry.

Raising Hope is just kind of there unfortunately. New Girl doesn't have enough time under its belt (in 2 years, it probably makes the field easily). Modern Family was another goof. Sorry.

I was hoping Community would be the Dunk City of this thing. Then I remembered only weirdos like me watch it.

Unless the theme song was the only thing being judged, I do not understand Night Court pounding The Office like they're Georgetown. At all.

Parks and Rec losing just makes me want to take my ball and go home. If it's on Netflix, start at season 2 and go from there. Trust me.

I couldn't give two spits about Night Court but I hate The Office. And no, it's not because it doesn't have a laugh track to "tell me when something's funny"

Hmm, I don't like that.

Also, I can't stand The Office so Night Court was the automatic choice, and if Community was up against The Office, BBT, or Parks and Rec, I would've voted for it but it's up against a powerhouse that comes on literally about 10x a day. Destined to fail...

Me neither, and all my comments that I didn't get what I was doing still didn't lead to a "oh this is how it works" comment.  So now I'm mostly just reading.

in my mind...we are "voting for the winners" after the poll closes, votes are tallied and we move to the next round...kinda like the "final four" college hoops thingy...and it keeps going til we have two then finally one "the winner" in all the categories.....does that help?
in my mind that was helpful....(cheesy grinning smiley)

I dunno, but yes it is a tournament. Most votes advance each round.

We call the tournament sheets we fill out brackets (like his pdf in the intro). Like the march madness games here... what were they called?

I'm sorry, I would have tried to help you understand initially but I had no idea what you didn't get. And since Nyce is mostly canadian, it just never occurred to me that y'all didn't call them that.
