Being Kevin Costner
I figured it'd been awhile since Being Tom Cruise, and it was time to bring forth another actor that we could replace.

Being Kevin Costner PhotoStolen from Tom Cruise intro because it still applies:
I think that all of my favorite movies starring Tom Cruise Kevin Costner would be just as good with someone else in his role. Almost anyone else. Seriously. There are some actors that just "become" their character (Johnny Depp, anyone?) and Tom Cruise Kevin Costner isn't one of them. He's [pretty much] always...Tom Cruise Kevin Costner

I figured we could play a little game. Let's recast Tom Cruise Kevin Costner with another actor. They don't have to look like him or act like him - I want to know who would be better in that part or make that part better. So, say I pick Field of Dreams...I'm casting Timothy Olyphant as Ray, just because.

Just pick a movie and recast. If the one you want isn't here, use it anyway!

Chasing Dreams
The Big Chill
Testament
Fandango
Silverado
American Flyers
The Untouchables
No Way Out
Bull Durham
Field of Dreams
The Gunrunner
Revenge
Dances With Wolves
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
JFK
The Bodyguard
A Perfect World
Wyatt Earp
Waterworld
Tin Cup
The Postman
Message in a Bottle
For Love of the Game
Play It to the Bone
Thirteen Days
3000 Miles to Graceland
Dragonfly
The Guardian
Mr. Brooks

Mr. Brooks is probably  my favorite movie he's in - but it's not because of him; it's just an awesomely written flick. I'm just not a huge fan of his, and I think a lot of people could probably replace him in almost anything he's done. It's just my opinion though. My mom would probably slap me silly if she saw this poll.

Costner is prominent in, or stars in, some of my favorite movies of the last 30 years...Silverado. Bull Durham, Field of Dreams (yes, I DO love baseball), Tin Cup, The Company Men (I'm not so fond of corporate America, though).

When is Nick Cage featured? He seems to evoke universal hate, so I'm amazed he hasn't been roasted yet.

I probably would've liked "Wyatt Earp" more if it was Jeff Bridges.... Timothy Olyphant....or My Jesus.

That will be a tough one. I heart Nic Cage even when he's gawd awful. I haven't decided if he'll be included yet or not.

I can't remember when I've ever said to myself "Gawd...I hate that movie just because 'insert name here' was in it. It would have been so much better if 'insert name here' had starred, instead." My comment indicated how I watch a movie...in it's entirety, without picking it apart. If I don't like a movie, it's because it's a crappy movie, or. worse yet, it is boring (re:Solaris).

Very hard to imagine anyone but Costner playing Eliot Ness or Ray Kinsella.  Both roles were very well suited to his style.
#27 | 461 days ago

Maybe Sly Stallone as Crash in Bull Durham? "Nuke, yo Nuke, the other team drew first blood."

Although, Costner did a pretty good job in "JFK" .... I always wondered if Harrison Ford woulda did a better job, because the Attorney (Jim Garrison) part Kevin was playing, was older in reality. Other than that, I liked most of his movies.

Costner played a more naive version of Ness.  That version was more like Ness as a fish out of water and eventually changed.  Stack's version was much more in the traditional hero mode.  Full of bravado and certainty.  Nothing wrong with that version.  I just liked seeing the character grow and change a bit as opposed to Stack always being the tough good guy with few faults.  I doubt either actor could have successfully portrayed Ness the way the other did.
