One Hit Wonders - TONE LOC (1989)

"Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Loc -

Like Loc's other hit "Wild Thing," this was written by Marvin Young, who recorded as Young MC. Both songs have a similar sound and comical lyrics. "Wild Thing" was the first ever Platinum-certified Rap single; "Medina" was the second.

In 1959, The Clovers recorded Love Potion #9, and took almost 30 more years before another song about a powerful aphrodisiac became a big hit. In this song, Loc's love potion is the Funky Cold Medina, which is so powerful it even works on dogs. Loc makes it clear that you have to be very careful with the Medina, or it could have unintended consequences, like marriage.

This song contains a soup of samples. The drum break is from "Get Off Your Ass and Jam" by Funkadelic, and the main guitar riff is from "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner. Other samples are "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones (when this song is mentioned), "Christine Sixteen" by KISS, "All Right Now" by Free, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. (thanks, Donovan Berry - El Dorado, AR)

The dogs mentioned in the lyrics were spokesdogs of the '80s. Spuds McKenzie shilled for Budweiser and Alex sold Strohs.

Tone Loc is the stage name of Anthony Terrell Smith. His stage name comes from "Antonio Loco" ("Crazy Antonio"), a nickname his friends gave him.

Tome Loc's gravelly, hoarse voice was the result of a childhood tea-drinking accident that left his throat scalded.

i was on a date, riding a cool wave of confidence and for whatever reason, brought up "tone lock." it's kind of a cornerstone in our relationship. every fight ends with "oh yeah? well, you thought it was 'tone lock' and i still love you," and there's nothing i can say. cause it's true. i really did think it was "tone lock."

i have an awkward 1/2-second moment every time the uncle-buck-walking-out-of-the-school intro cues up on the music player and i can't tell for that half second if it's wild thing (tone lock) or janie's crying (van halen)

Ok, so he's a 2 hit wonder (Wild Thing)

Cold coolin at a bar, and I'm lookin for some action
But like Mike Jagger said, I can't get no satisfaction
The girls are all around, but none of them wanna get with me
My threads are fresh and I'm lookin def, yo, what's up with L-o-c?
The girls is all jockin at the other end of the bar
Havin drinks with some no-name chump, when they know that I'm the star
So I got up and strolled over to the other side of the cantina
I asked the guy, "Why you so fly?" he said, "Funky Cold Medina"

I was about to say....

Introduce myself as Loc she said
"You're a liar"

I said "I got it goin' on baby doll
and I'm on fire"

Took her to the hotel
she said "You're the king"

I said "Be my queen
if you know what I mean
and let us do the wild thing

Back in the day, I wanted to see a concert where Tone Loc and Luther Campbell from 2 live crew would be together.
