I'M back
now that I am back from my hiatus .I will bring something up that is bothering me.Several weeks ago a dear friend of mine was at home with his wife at about 9 pm one night three thugs broke into his house beat up him and his wife and rob them .They had on ski masks but three days later they were got breaking into a convience store, the reason they knew they had rob my friend they still had the jewelery and other things they stoled from them. The D.A. told them since they couldn't say for sure which one beat him and his wife up the most they could get them on is breaking and entering and possession of stolen property ,plus the break in of the store .they got six months.I have been  one that doesn't want to have a gun around the house but my wife and I are going to get one,I hope this is a good idea, what do you think about it.

I wouldn't but it's a shame that the world has come to this only because you don't know what the thugs carry when they break in to a house or store. Just be careful if you do get one and keep it in a safe place that only you or your wife can get to it quickly if needed. I hope your friend and his wife are doing better now and I wish those IDIOTS would have gotten more time!

I will never own one, however I will also never tell someone else not to buy one.  If it makes you and your wife feel safe in your home, plus gives you peace of mind than by all means get one.

Unless you've had them before or are comfortable with them, I don't think getting a fire arm out of fear is a good idea, because you're going to end up using it out fear. Have you thought about an alarm system with a panic button or something?

I was told one time by a cop friend of mine to never consider getting a gun for protection unless I was trained and FULLY prepared to use it if I was forced. He said even one instant of hesitation was all someone needed to kill you with your own gun. So, I'm pretty sure I would hesitate...at least now. Who knows what might happen in the future. My husband has a pistol, locked in a safe, and I have no idea where the keys are. His grandfather died recently and he inherited a beautiful shotgun that I actually am willing to go out and learn how to shoot, because for some reason that doesn't scare me as much (I'm a weirdo).

Anyway Captain - if you and your wife are comfortable using a gun then by all means you should. If you're not, and still want one, then i would suggest getting comfy with one. If you can't do that, then maybe a stronger security system? Like Doug - while I may not like the whole gun thing, I think people should get them if they want them.

I am somewhat biased here cause i own a gun or two and i like em so i can't really come up with any good reason not to get one.

But having a gun can be useless and dangerous if you have no idea how to use it so ya don't want that. Get out to the range and learn how to Dirty Harry those bast**ds !

I have had a gun and was fully trained in using one, cleaning one, etc.  I got rid of the one I had when I had my kids, my choice completely.  If you don't know how to use one and are very comfortable with it, and with the knowledge that you might have to use it with lethal force, I agree with the others that it might not be the best idea, but you need to do what YOU need for your peace of mind.

The bigger issue here for me is that they didn't get more time.  Rather than only charging them with the breaking and entering, they should ALL have been charged with the assault.  If the two who didn't do the beating don\t want that charge against them, they could always say who did do it.  Ridiculous that they aren't charged!

The others have given good advice of guns. I'm going to take another angle. Most of us are lazy and will only go after the low hanging fruit. Criminals are no exception. So move your fruit up a few branches. If you get a window sticker for a security system even if you don't actually have the system, maybe get a dog, etc etc...  to make the crooks look elsewhere.

I own a small .25 that I keep under my car seat at all times, to protect myself and my personal valuables that I carry around, including my car and wallet. I've never used it on anyone or threatened to yet, but it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm in a position though where I can defend myself without the gun. Other than that I also own it just for the sake of owning a firearm, the only time I ever do use it is when I'm out of town with friends and having target practice by shooting trees & cacti.

I have a gun, fully trained to use it, and I will.  Come into my house uninvited with intention to harm me, and I will put a hole in your head.  I live alone and have had someone try my door.  When they saw me point the gun, they left in a big giant hurry.

North Carolina laws are a bit out dated. Time for your reps to do their jobs. Most states have laws on the books if you are involved in (such and such crime) everyone caught gets charged, unless of course there's a talker, getting a deal.
That being said: I have 2 firearms. I am legal, I know how to use them, I will use them. Fear is never a reason to get a gun. You have to do what makes you and the missus feel safe. Alarms, iron screen doors with dead bolt type locks, or yeah, even putting an Alarm Companies sticker in your window can deter thieves.
