Can Shaquille O'neal actually help Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins

Shaq is going to mentor DeMarcus Cousins; will it work?

by droth droth 7/2/13
Shaq has reportedly met with two of the Sacramento Kings new owners, Vivek Ranadive and Mark Marstrov, and Sacramento fans are optimistic about the resulting announcement.

The Shaqtus said that he wanted to help make Kings center DeMarcus Cousins the best big man in the league.  He didn't go into details after meeting the Kings' owners for dinner last week, simply saying that he was going to be involved in the organization.

Since entering the league three seasons ago, Cousins has been a beast when he's been able to play consistent minutes.  At 6'11" 270 pounds, he is a load and his soft shooting touch has enabled him to attack from the post and from the outside.  His per 36 minute stats are great, but his rocky relationship with coaches, teammates, past coaches, and the entire NBA officiating crew has resulted in a short leash and plenty of time on the bench because of behavior and foul trouble.

Shaq is a legend but the question is: will it make a difference?

Can O'neal get through to the young center?  Even if the answer is 'yes', is O'neal the right guy for the job?

Can Shaquille O'neal actually help Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins PhotoO'neal is a beloved actor, tv personality, and rapper as well as being one of the most physically dominant athletes of all time.  He has a larger-than-life personality and a smile the size of Rhode Island.

One criticism of Shaq as a player is that he
could have been the greatest player of his generation if he really wanted to be, if he had the mean streak that Kobe or MJ have.

Cousins may not have be as dominant as Shaq, but like O'neal, his success is in his own hands.

With proper motivation and perspective, Cousins could end up being the best big man in the league. He has that ability. I'm just not convinced that O'neal understands the mentality that Cousins needs to develop in order to get there.

O'neal was successful because he was able to control his fun-loving, happy-go-lucky attitude and turn in into aggression when he needed to.  Cousins needs the polar opposite.  He needs to lighten up and have fun, rather than acting as a human roller coaster every time the official makes a call.

Even if their unique personalities make it a strange match, it's better than nothing.  If Cousins can listen to anybody, that's a step in the right direction.  So I pose the question to you, do you think Shaq will be able to effectively mentor DeMarcus?

Kings fans are excited about the possibility and Boogie definitely needs a kick in the pants, but their seemingly opposite personalities make them a strange match.  Will this plan work?

On both off the court and on the court he certainly can't hurt the young man's game.  Might want to bring someone else if free throws are a problem thoughwink
