Their free scholarship should be payment enough.

Seeing how the NCAA is an entire group of Roger Goodell's, I seriously doubt they will ever be paid.  The NCAA should be disbanded and started over, although the same has been said for 20+ years and their still their with rulebooks from 30 years ago.  Sounds like the government.

if every student going to college needs a job to survive four years of school, then athletes should work too.

I don't watch college sports per se, but maybe if they got paid and put that money into some sort of account to save for later, after the infamy.

Many college football and basketball players already get a ton of perks even graduating seniors don't get.  Why give them money too?  The top players barely even go to class!

As it stands right now the athletic departments probably ought to just disassociate themselves from the rest of the school and become their own entity.  Like when Pixar split away from Lucasfilm to become their own agency.   There really is very little connection between college football and basketball with colleges.   Just in name only.

IMO they should get something considering all the money they make for the school and the NCAA. If not then at least the ability to get a legit part time job. Some of these players dont have mom and dad sending them money to help out with the little stuff.

School is expensive, so in a sense they kind of already do - the "money" they're getting paid is paying for their tuition. Non-athletes have to work side jobs just to make a dent in their student loans/pay their tuition unless they're there on an academic scholarship. As ML said, they already get a lot of perks and an education for playing a sport.

What does Star Wars have to do with the dilemma of paying college players?  Absolutely nothing.  Try again.

I tend to lean with the student-athlete side of this.
I played a non-revenue generating sport, so the scholarships we had available for the team covered about 1/3 of the players so guys get partials and so on. Most football programs that aren't on some form of probation have I think around 85 full scholarships they can hand out. That takes care of most of your team, but at the same time there is more that goes into this than saying, "oh college is expensive, they should take their scholarships and be happy". If you're a high level college athlete, your day is usually pretty full. Practices, lifting, training, etc in the morning, then a day of classes then practices, meetings, training, etc in the afternoon into the evening. If you're lucky, you can get dinner by 9pm and try to squeeze in a little time to study. Throw in the fact that for the most part, you don't get to enjoy breaks. You're expected to maintain certain standards during the summers, christmas vacations and most other breaks there are team functions where at least you get a few days off of class.
The stress and expectations put on top tier football players for instance is ridiculous and making sure you're in good enough shape to play D1 football is a job in and of itself. Most people don't realize that it takes some serious work to get to and maintain that kind of physique. While the cliche thing is to bash athletes as being half retarded and not going to class, the actuality is that a superior majority of student athletes are better students than the general population. Whether it be by standards set forth by their coaches, family, the NCAA clearinghouse or self, this is something that is far too often overlooked.
Then you look at the billions of dollars that are thrown around surrounding college athletics every year and what you have really does amount to indentured servitude.
