College Football 2014: Game 1 of Our 'Best Coaches' Tournament (Nick Saban vs. Chris Petersen)

Best Coaches Tournament: Nick Saban vs. Chris Petersen

by Tyler_Waddell Tyler_Waddell 4/7/14
On Friday, we introduced our “Best College Football Coaches Tournament,” which is a 16-coach bracket that will determine who the best current college football coach based off YOUR poll results. College Football 2014: Game 1 of Our 'Best Coaches' Tournament (Nick Saban vs. Chris Petersen) Photo

It’s time to tip things off—or for better choice of words, kick them off—with our first matchup: Nick Saban vs. Chris Petersen.

Your classic No. 1-seed against the feisty, yet always overmatched No. 16-seed. Saban is coming off another successful campaign in Tuscaloosa (and enters 2014 with the top-ranked recruiting class), whereas Petersen enters unfamiliar territory as the new coach of the Washington Huskies.

Here are their résumés:

No. 1 – Nick Saban, Alabama: Without doubt the best coach of the BCS era—and undoubtedly one of the all-time greats—Saban is a four-time national championship winner (one with LSU, three with Alabama) and is the only coach in history to win two titles with two different FBS schools. The Crimson Tide slipped a little by losing consecutive games to end the 2013 season, but should be back in contention for the College Football Playoffs. He has an overall record of 165-57-1 and is 74-15 with Alabama.

No. 16 – Chris Petersen, Washington: Talk about a winner: Petersen’s Boise State teams went a combined 92-12 under his tenure, posting a 5-2 postseason record and two Fiesta Bowl wins. He coached two undefeated teams (2006, 2009) and ran through the Mountain West for five conference titles in eight seasons. The question remains, however, if Petersen can win in a major conference against top-quality competition, especially with Gary Patterson's fall from grace with TCU in the Big 12. We’ll find out in the coming years with his new home in Washington.
