April Book Club Vote 2014 (Edited 04/11/14 12:57PM by kteacher)
April is my month to pick the books. (sorry)

Up First.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller, this book was inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes. (Reading this book to my class. So good.)

Second.
Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10 by Marcus Luttrell
Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to be very close to Bin Laden with a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive. (heartbreaking)

Third.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

An unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Fourth......well, I thought I'd give a fourth. It didn't happen. April Book Club Vote 2014 (Edited 04/11/14 12:57PM by kteacher) Photo

Well, looks like I am going to read me one of those books. Sounds like it teaches a good lesson in empathy.

I'd read something that teaches apathy, but I don't care about that. i mean, why?

Nice poll---->yes

I just read The One and Only Ivan and loved it.

I voted the way I did b/c a coworker and I were talking about this book today. Neither of us have read it.

I've been overly emotional lately (I think it's the stress) so I'm thinking Lone Survivor would just about kill me...and I'm not so sure Ivan won't as well. Of course I'm down for whatever though.
