College Football 2014: Game 3 of Our 'Best Coaches' Tournament (Les Miles vs. Frank Beamer)

Best Coaches Tournament: Les Miles vs. Frank Beamer

We have the final tallies from the battle between 2-seed Urban Meyer and 15-seed Kevin Sumlin in Game 2 of our Best Coaches Tournament. College Football 2014: Game 3 of Our 'Best Coaches' Tournament (Les Miles vs. Frank Beamer) Photo

After a short, yet ensuring scare, Meyer was able to hold off any comeback attempt from Sumlin, taking the majority of the fan votes and moving on to the next round.

Next up his Game 3, which features 3-seed Les Miles against 14-seed Frank Beamer, and all I want to know is if we’re going to see another Mercer-like upset.

The LSU Tigers got a jumpstart for their offense thanks to new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, scoring 35.8 points per game. But for once, it was the defense that held Miles’ crew back at times, unable to get big stops vs. Georgia, Ole Miss and Alabama. Still, another 10-win season is nothing to scoff at and leads to a lot of promise and expectations for the 2014 campaign.

Virginia Tech followed its 7-6 season in 2012 with one more win in 2013, but nothing indicates that the program will return to being a powerhouse in the ACC anytime soon. Losers of four out of their last six games—including a 42-12 beatdown by UCLA in the Sun Bowl—we got a small sample of how 2014 might look for Beamer and Co. The forecast is bleak.

Here are their résumés:

No. 3 – Les Miles, LSU: Since leaving Oklahoma State in 2004 for the LSU job, Miles has compiled a 95-24 (52-20 SEC) record in arguably the most difficult division in all of college football. He’s 6-3 in bowl games with the Tigers, winning the 2007 BCS National Championship (and losing the controversial matchup with Alabama in 2011). One of the best recruiters in the country—his classes have all ranked inside the Top 12 in every year but his first—and known for developing NFL-caliber defenses, Miles has groomed himself into one of the best coaches the world has to offer.

No. 14 – Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech: Despite the team’s struggles the last two years, there’s no doubt that Beamer is one of the best coaches in the nation. Beamer took over a program in 1987 that had won just three bowl games over an 18-year span and turned it into an consistent winner. He has seven conference titles—four coming from the 2004-11 run where the Hokies won at least 10 games every season—and hasn’t missed the postseason since 1992 (!!!). He currently sits as the 12th-winningest college football coach in the history of the game. Beamer is Virginia Tech.
