When there is a national survery of some kind, like real estate, or education, they recognize DC in addition to the 50 states.  Like how SC was ranked 51st in SAT scores a few years ago.

I can name all 50, or if you wanted to, there's several "states" that are called by different terms. I think Maryland is a different listing, as vermont, that was once a country, qualifies as.
For a true fun, Puerto Rico, half the Virgin Islands, Guam, and several parts of the Trust Territories, random Islands, still qualify as ours, but have no stand-alone governing, either due to lack of people, or, for that matter, aren't populated, like Howland and Baker.
I'm really starting to wonder if Puerto Rico will ever be it's own land, or become a state.

My friend and I once drove from Syracuse New York to Atlanta.  To pass the time we bagan to pay attention to the license plates off the cars on the road with us.  I wrote them down as we saw a new one.  We had 48 and couldn't for the life of us figure out which we were missing.  Out of nowhere- I suddenly had an epiphany and shouted "Wyoming!!".  Ok- so then we were short one state.  On our way back to Syracuse, my friend saw our 50th state on a tractor trailer.  She was so excited she couldn't spit out the word.  She pointed frantically saying "ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh  UTAH!!!"

We both named our next cars after these two states.  I had Wyoming, and she Utah.

I would have thought you would be missing Hawaii and Alaska.  Given those are very hard to find AND you were on the east coast as well.

Here in CA I have seen the rare Alaska license plate.  But I think I have seen perhaps two Hawaii's in my life here.

Would you believe that's the last state I was missing when I wrote my list above earlier?  I had 49 states and I'm going by areas of the country and finally shouted to myself "UTAH!"

Very true.  Whenever we saw a plate from a far away state we would always say "oooh,  You are so lost dude.  And you're going the wrong way to get home."
