NFL Super Bowl Odds & Picks

Patriots & Cowboys Favored To Meet In Super Bowl XLIII

by CriticalFanatic | 9/4/0851 Comment Comments »
NFL Super Bowl Odds & Picks PhotoIn the words of Santana Moss, "We are all geeked."

Yes, the NFL season is just about here, kicking off tonight in New York with the defending Super Bowl Champ Giants facing off against the Washington Redskins and their new head coach Jim Zorn.

We'll get into the specifics of this game and all the week one contests later, but first it's time to go on record with your Super Bowl XLIII predictions.

Vegas has posted the most recent odds and once again it's the New England Patriots who are favored to lift the Lombardi Trophy in Tampa. Are you going with the favorite again, or a longer shot like last year's Giants?

Here's the top odds to win the Super Bowl:

7/2    New England Patriots
6/1    Dallas Cowboys
7/1    San Diego Chargers
15/2  Indianapolis Colts
13/1  Jacksonville Jaguars
14/1  Minnesota Vikings
16/1  New Orleans Saints
20/1  New York Giants
25/1  Seattle Seahawks
25/1  Philadelphia Eagles
25/1  New York Jets

Anyone else as stunned as I am to see the Saints up there at 16-to-1 odds? Who's putting money down on that? And just for the record, I won't be wagering on the Chicago Bears at 40/1. Wouldn't do it for 300/1.

Before we get to my pick and yours, here's a look at all the experts that have gone on record. We'll update as they do:

John Clayton (ESPN): Chargers over Cowboys
Matt Mosley (Hashmarks): Patriots over Cowboys
Gene Wojciechowski (ESPN): Patriots over Eagles
Seth Wickersham (ESPN Mag): Colts over Saints
Peter King (SI): Patriots over Cowboys
Dr. Z (SI): Patriots over Eagles
Don Banks (SI): Chargers over Saints
Pete Prisco (CBS): Colts over Saints
Skip Wood (USA Today): Jets over Packers ... funny guy
Dan Shanoff (Sporting News): Patriots over Cowboys
Bill Simmons (Page 2): Jaguars over Cowboys
Jay Glazer (Fox): Cowboys over Patriots

Now it's your turn. If you haven't already, a comprehensive NFL picks poll is attached below. It looks like the FanIQ community's pick is the Patriots over Cowboys.

As for myself, despite my better judgment, I believe this is the year Tony Romo delivers in the playoffs. His lack of wide receiver depth is concerning heading into the season, but with a strong running game and improved defense they'll work it out and have home field advantage throughout the NFC. My small curveball is that the Cowboys will defeat the Colts, not the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIII.

with a healthy deuce and a happy shockey... throw in a maturing meachem to support Colston... and not having to overwork Bush...and this is a scary offense with brees in his prime. If the draft and offseason has the defense improved, and I think it will be, this is a very solid team. Add an easy schedule to the mix... and The saints are my surprise prediction to beat a tough Jacksonville in the Super Bowl.

Thru all of you screaming I surely hope you did not just reference the 1967 Dolphins. You know the team that did not make the playoffs in 1967. I mean with all 4 wins they had that season. I would think thay anyone who talks in all caps would know its the 72 dolphins what went 17-0-0. But I did not scream about this either

So for #23, why didn't you pick the Packers? Also the Dolphins went undefeated in '72, don't make that mistake again.

Possible surprise teams this season:

1)   Houston.    I think their team will be much improved, a great defense, and if Schaub & Johnson can stay healthy they'll put up some points.    They're in a tough division, but they could be one of the most improved teams.
2)  Detroit.    I know.....it's the Lions !     But, their division is weaker this year, and I think they've gotten better, and have some key players in 'contract years'.
3)  Denver.    Shanahan is still one of the better coaches in the league.    And Cutler last year was sick; this year he is healthy.     Losing Marshall will hurt for a few weeks, but their run game should be strong, and the defense, while not elite, is better than most.
4)  New Orleans.   Last year's schedule was brutal for them, and they certainly suffered with injuries.     I'll be surprised if they don't win their division by a couple of games, and if they avoid key injuries and get a stronger running game, the road to the Super Bowl could go through New Orleans !     I also can see Brees winning MVP too !

Great poll !

Not really. All 4 teams have a shot at that division.  Pacman will be a bust and the Eagles improved their DB's and their linebackers are already very talented , but now have more experience.  The return game was another thing that lost them games last year, and with Jackson, it's lookin pretty good.  Also, McNabb has been amazing this preseason, so if he stays healthy things will be great.

Everyone is overrating Dallas.  If they all say this is the toughest or second toughest division in football, why is their only one team with a shot at winning?

Their linebackers SUCK.  Other than that, Philly should be good, but I think Dallas has the best team in the NFC.

Who gave that a smart? The linebackers dont have much experience, they are very talented and with and extra year under them, they will be great this year.

Um, Chris Gocong and Stewart Bradley couldn't even start on most teams.  Gaither isn't bad, but I don't see anything special out of that group.  IMO maybe the worst LB group in football.

i gave you a smart for that one too mr NFL!!!!!

The Eagles didnt get any playmakers, like Mcnabb and westbrook wanted. Meaning they wont score in the redzone AGAIN this year. SOME SAY this might be mcnabbs last year.
No holds barred on westbrook! One of the top ten players right now period.
IF he doesnt get hurt, their best addition this year could be Desean Jackson, if hes durable. Your tight end could solve your Redzone problem. Once again if not injured. O LINE IS PERFECT, for the most part, As is the D - Line.  Your linebackers...are promising. BUT NOT stars to be counted on. ASANTE Samuels would be great!!!.....if the eagles ran the right coverage . And alas Lito Shepherd another problem with injury.  Regardless of who gets hurt....they better HOPE they make it to the superbowl as this will probably be the final year for 2 to 3 Big names on that team.

Do i think a Career ending injury prone eagles will make it...well theres better chances in Vegas!
