Laptops in Coffee Shops: What Do You Do When You Have to Go to the Bathroom? (Edited 01/01/09 03:46PM by Seth)
Laptops in Coffee Shops: What Do You Do When You Have to Go to the Bathroom? (Edited 01/01/09 03:46PM by Seth) PhotoOriginally, this question was going to involve how often you bring a laptop to coffee shops, but when I discussed it with our own Jason Chen, he revealed to me that he always wondered what people do when they inevitably have to go to the bathroom. Immediately I realized that was a far more entertaining and thought provoking angle. Seriously—what do you do when you have a laptop open and you have had multiple cups of coffee? Do you pack everything up and bring it in the bathroom with you? Do you take a chance and leave it sitting on the table? Or do you simply wait until you are finished working?

I rarely go to coffee shops but I do travel a ton so am often in airports bars or restaurants. Most of the time I just ask someone to keep an eye on my laptop if I have to go. One time I came back and my laptop was gone and I was ready to flip out until I saw one of my clients sitting at the bar laughing his ass off. We had a few drinks and when he went to the bathroom I opened his laptop and changed his backdrop to a rather randy picture of two guys going at it. I was a row over from him on the flight and when he turned on his laptop the people next to him actually gasped loud enough for me to hear it. He was less than pleased.

First, the Starbucks is not your office. You shouldn't be camped out that long.

Second, you can actually converse with other people in the Starbucks. You can ask someone else to watch your crap and offer to reciprocate.

Third, just because no one's watching doesn't mean that you can't write. Writing does not require an audience. Stop camping at the Starbucks.

Anyone from a BIG major metropolis care to respond?

And maybe, just maybe there are independently wealthy people here that love to go to Starbucks. Let's say they're socially challenged and need the attention. Who me? I don't go to Starbucks

I don't own a laptop (however I am currently using one that I borrowed for my trip)...and I hate coffee so it wouldn't be a problem, and I rarely use public restrooms...I guess I have no frame of reference here
