If Marmol were not on the roster, you can bet the Cubs would have made a fight to retain Kerry Wood.  Kevin Gregg is simply a fill-in for the loss of Howry.  The job is Marmol's to lose.

Kevin Gregg was unimpressive as an Angel both as a spot starter and middle reliever. I am not sure how he became a successful closer with The Marlins, but Carlos Marmol has better stuff than most Pitchers in the league, and I don't see him not becoming the Cubs closer.

In my opinion, Marmol was better suited as a setup man.  However, I think he'll be a pretty good closer as well.  It's going to take some time to adjust to his new role, but when he does, look out!

Despite his lack of playoff success, Lou knows what is best for the team. Your closer should be a guy that scares the other teams and can potentially strike out the side. Marmol is the man for that job.

Yeah, if we have to rely on Kevin Gregg for any length of time, get ready to choke on your beer.  Can you say "Latroy Hawkins."  I knew you could.

Marmol should get the most saves, but I hope they work Gregg in at time as well

Gregg is like Bob Wickman with a little better stuff, did I type Wickman, I meant Borowski, wait is their a former Indians closer pattern forming

If Gregg does have more it would not be a shock because Marmol is almost to valuable as a guy who can pitch the 7th and 8th innings.

The Cubs signed Gregg from Florida to be their closer.  I agree with many here that believe Marmol is better suited for the 7th and 8th innings.  Without a one-two closer punch in the last two innings, no team wins the world series, let alone the division.  If you look at the great teams that win, they have the guy in the eighth setting up the ninth for the win.  I suspect though that Pinella will use Marmol in the eighth and let him start the ninth.  If he runs into trouble Gregg will come in to nail down the last out.  That is why I said Gregg will get more saves than Marmol will.  The most valuable guy you have in the pen is the one that gets the team to the last out of each game and that is where Marmols' strength is.  You don't want to overuse him though, by asking him day in and day out to pitch the 8th and 9th.  For that reason, you have Gregg as the closer.  The greatest asset a pitcher has is confidence.  He could throw the ball at 100 mph, but if he is wild, he isn't an asset.  Gregg closed games for the Marlins and he is made for one inning.
