Should any professional sports team wear red? (Edited 02/05/09 09:18AM by thejenalynn)
This may seem like a superficial poll(especially coming from a Cardinals fan) but I think the question raises a serious point.  With red being the most attention grabbing color...ie red cars have higher insurance rates, can a Referee be completly impartial when the color of any teams jersey is the most psychologically attentions grabbing color?  I am not asking about Superbowl 43....done and over with.  I am asking in general...ie: detroit red wings...big penalty getters.  Please explain yout rational.

Edited from original question.... too early in the morning was thinking red wings wrote flyers.

First, the Flyers wear orange.

Second, some of the most successful franchise in pro sports wear red. The 49ers won 5 Super Bowl, the Bulls won 6 championships, the Red Wings have won 4 Stanley Cups in the last 11 years, etc.

Personally I think your statement is unfounded, and the red thing only applies to car insurance and bullfighting.

Sorry was thinking red wings wrote flyers too early in the morning .  I am not disputing that teams in red win championships.  My question is if the refs can be completely impartial.  Great teams win regardless of bad calls/ excessive calls.  That doesn't mean that they don't get called more often.

I believe the question concerns not the success of a team that wears red (or a derivative of red ie. orange), it has to do with officiating.  I think that YES, teams who wear red colors get more negative attention than teams who do not.  Just like the fact that people who drive red cars are more likely to get pulled over and ticketed than those who drive cars of a different color... Teams wearing red are called for more penalties in a game than the opposing team NOT wearing red.  I think this is a relevant question and should be looked into...

Okay, just looking at the numbers. There are 8 teams in the NHL whose primary home uniform color is red. Washington, Montreal, Calgary, Detroit,  New Jersey, Carolina, Ottawa, and Chicago.

2 of those teams are in the top ten in the league in penalty minutes, however, 4 are in the bottom 10.

If you look at times shorthanded, 3 are in the top ten, and 3 are in the bottom 11.

Carolina and Detroit are the least penalized teams in the league.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,570918,00.html This link here both proves and disproves my theory.  Red jerseys do in fact come into play when it comes to officiating.  My point is that when a team is wearing red it DOES effect judgement.  Even the stats above by biskit67 prove that point.  More often than not the teams in red get the better calls.  I stand by my original answer that a professional sports team should not wear red due to the psychology of the color itself.

The Oakland Raiders wear silver and black and are historically one of the most penalized teams in the NFL every season.

You are correct there... but why?  Could it be that even non-hockey fans love the Wings?  I've met too many "rabid" Red Wing fans who could tell me nothing of the game of hockey... or even why they love the Wings sooooo much!!!  Or perhaps the insane bias that ESPN provides... other than a few star players from other teams, they are ALWAYS talking about the Wings, not to mention televising almost every Wings game!  Could it be dynasty?  Cup wins?  Money?  "Hockey Town"?  HYPE!!!!????  The questioned asked is if teams who wear RED get more attention... good or bad...

The Raiders, Lions, and Cowboys are historically three of the most penalized teams in NFL History- neither of them wear red.  Maybe it's the SILVER that attracts attention???

"Mythbusters" disproved this red theory with bulls already. [Citation needed]
