A Tough Call On The Big Game

by CriticalFanatic CriticalFanatic 1/8/075 Comment Comments »
A Tough Call On The Big Game PhotoFans and experts are overwhelmingly picking the Ohio State Buckeyes to win the National Title Game tonight. I sided with the majority, but here's four major reasons I had a very difficult time coming to that conclusion.

1. November 18, 2006
That was the last time the Buckeyes played a football game. It has a factor. USC had played two more games after Michigan's last game, and I'm telling you that had more to do with the Trojans romp than talent.

2. 6 of 8 underdog's have won the BCS title game
We'll give the nod to the media here. Last year USC was the greatest team to have ever graced a football field by the time the Rose Bowl came around. ESPN curtailed it's overhype a bit ... primarily because they don't have the game ... but nonetheless, everyone crowned Ohio State after they beat Michigan. Florida has had a month of listening to all of this.

3. Michigan scored 39 on the Buckeye D
That's a lot of points. Florida has a better offense and more playmakers.

4. Trickeration
Do you think Urban Meyer is going to let Chris Peterson get all the attention. Urban was the one to pull off the hook & ladder first in a BCS game. Jim Tressel is an outstanding coach, but he'll play it closer to the sweatervest. Meyer will use several trick plays tonight I'm afraid a few are going to work. (see: Percy Harvin)

This is a tough call, but I'm going with the Buckeyes.

They are going to have to beat Florida by passing. Florida hasn't giving up a 100 yard game in 18 straight games.

The Buckeyes have something that Florida hasn't seen Chris Wells, AP will get the bulk of carry's but Wells will come in in the 4th quarter and finish it. OSU wins 50-30

If Ohio State scores 50 then the world is coming to an end. The most points florida gave up all season was 28.

OSU only put up more than 50 once this year so I doubt they will score that much on Florida. But remember before playing OSU, Michigan had the #1 defense (which only gave up a high of 26 all season) and they got lit up for 42 points and 503 yards.

And if OSU can put up 187 rushing yards against Michigan, they can run on Florida too.

Well I think Florida's defense is much faster than Michigan's. Michigan and Florida's d-line are a push but I think our linebackers are slightly better.  I also think the poor turf during the Michigan game had a significant factor in the offensive output.  I never seen so much slipping in my life on both sides.

LMAO. Huh??? OSU may win the game but they will not beat Florida running the ball. Period. It's obvious that most here haven't seen Florida even play this year and are just joining the bandwagon. You are right about one thing...Florida hasn't seen Chris Wells. This is the same Chris Wells that hasn't had a 100 yard rushing game this year, right? The same one that has a whopping 500 yards his whole career??? He will be a good back but he's not great enough yet to make a comment like that. lol They HAVE seen a player called Darren McFadden. The 2nd best rb in the nation only behind Peterson. McFadden, has had games of 185, 112, 129, 145 (against Auburn), 219, 181 (against Tennessee) and 182 (against LSU) But against the Gators he carried the ball 21 times for only 73 yards. The Gators are a LOT faster than Michigan. You aren't going to run on them. But yea, Florida hasn't seen a player like Wells.

it's gonna be close, I don't think either team will blow the other out.  OSU is offensive, Florida is defensive.  I think if the game stays low-scoring the Gators will win, cuz I don't think their offense can keep up with OSU's.

I think Florida's defense should dominate the OSU offense in the 1st quarter while OSU tries to knock off the rust from not playing in so long.

This may be true, but as long as OSU doesn't let Florida jump out to a big lead, hopefully that won't be a problem.

Then I guess Ohio State fans shouldn't say that the gators haven't seen a RB like Wells yet. That's what I was replying to. It wasn't to cut down Wells, it was to show how stupid that comment was. I've been a Buckeye fan since I was 5. I'm not about to cut them down. I just happen to like the Gators also. This game is the worst-case scenario for me because I won't be happy with whoever wins other than the fact I can shove it into Go Blow fans that are so fricken biased here in Michigan.

No way OSU puts up 50. As for Wells, he is talented, but Florida has kept a lot of talented backs in check this year. See: Loroenzo Booker, Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Kenny Irons. All of them started and NONE of them got 100 yards.

I predict a low scoring game early as both teams knock off the rust from the layoff.  I dont think either team will have much success running the ball so it will come down to which QB makes the least amount of mistakes in the passing game.  That said, I like OSU and Troy Smith, 24-21

Here I go posting about a team that's not even in the big game, but since you brought it up, CF:

  • Re: the layoff and how Michigan and USC stack up against each other, I'm not saying that having less time off didn't help the Trojans, but they had a one-month layoff themselves. I did think Michigan would win the Rose Bowl, but maybe SC was somewhat better than had been evident. I don't know how much the Wolverines dealt with injuries during the season, but I think the Trojans' problems in that area were significant.
  • Re: the hype that the Trojans recieved last year (when they lost to Texas), I'm not here to defend everything that everyone may have said. Still, in fairness to that USC team, they may have had one of the best offenses in college football history, while I believe 5 or 6 of their starting 11 on D were first-year starters.

I understand USC had a big layoff ... but they still had played two games ... TWO since Michigan last played.

USC was certainly good last year ... they let the hype get to them. Defense is also a part of football and that was their weakness.

It wouldn't have been as close if OSU played them the week after they beat Michigan but the long layoff kill every team.

The lack of experience in USC's D last year and the fact that one of the main arguments for Vince Young's success as a pro is the fact that his team won games with him starting are two reasons why I think the jury is still out on VY. Yes, his Rose Bowl outing was great and yes, I believe he has made some plays in the NFL, but I believe he also had a sub-70 passer rating. Here I am, even more off topic and perhaps getting more controversial...
