Has Hollywood become watered Down, or have I just become old? (Edited 10/29/09 02:35PM by Jess)
I was reading about a "new" movie ready to go into production...it was "Footloose".  OK, Kevin Bacon is Footloose and the movie made his career.  I remember it well, and still hear te music and see the movie periodically.  They are already remaking it.  I am disturbed by this.  The actor who is playing Ren (Bacon's part) is some kid I never heard of.  Now I know Chris Penn has died but this movie should not be remade just yet.  Right?

By the way I like movies with "morons" like Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and company. I think they are funny.

Remake the Karate Kid?  NOOOOO!!!!!

The creativity shortage is not related only to the movies, music is just as bad.

I agree they should not be remaking it so soon.  In fact i only saw it for the first time a year or so ago.  Loved  it and the music.  I have some of the music downloaded and play it in my music room.

Hollywood has been watered down for years unless you like stupid movies with Jack Black and other morons. They cater to teenagers, most of whom wouldn't know a great movie if they were starring at one. It's pretty bad when the animated movies are the best movies left to see, and an occasional one like Gran Torino and Taken.

It was a sillyazz movie then...it will bee a sillyazz movie tomorrow - no matter who is in it!

When is the next MARVEL movie coming out...they are the only things that SEEM real!!

Ahhh yes.  Footloose. LOL   Brings back some good memories.

They remake anything that will sell.  It's not too early for footloose.

I've only heard about Footloose in mags so won't know what special place it hold with viewers and esp our dear DTG..
I've learnt to enjoy remake considering that advance technology and polishing of kinks in original movies are done to make them more appealing.. I don't know whether this would hold good in the case of Footloose..

Some remakes are as good or better than the original, some are really bad.  I enjoyed Footloose and think it may be a good remake.

No they should not remake it! It is a great movie.  Now they want to go and change it's image.  They are also remaking Flash Dance!  I mean, look how far Dirty Dancing Havana Nights went? That one should have never made!  WTF??? Has Hollywood ran out of movie ideas??

The movie industry keeps working and sometimes you wonder about their choices.  I say to my fellow 'Q' members - write scripts - I'll bet you can do better than a lot of the crap they are making now, plus you will be paid well.

They should remake awful 80's movies that can be improved upon, and if not, nobody would care. For instance:
Disney could remake "Drop Dead Fred" with a CG / live action mix. Plus this these good ideas gone bad: Mannequin, Night of the Comet, Johnny Be Good, The Toy and anything with Pia Zadora and or Lorenzo Lamas in it. Might sound stupid, but it's much better than butchering classics.

It's definitely a mistake! The lead actor is some punk from "Gossip Girl" and he looks like he has all the personality of your average streetlight. I'm sure he has great abs and the 15 year old girls will make the movie profitable in its first weekend. It is going to be essentially High School Musical but the antagonist (I'm using that term very loosely) will be a fundamentalist. They're going to make the original look like Citizen Kane.

The original, for all the dancing and the slightly funny sequence where Ren works out his angst in a beer fueled dance/gymnastics routine in a saw mill, has got some edgier elements. Ren is offered pot, Lithgow's daughter is a tramp who drives her dad nuts. The new Ren will be offered a wine cooler at the lock-in dance and the school hottie will have a reputation for reading subversive literature like  "Catcher in the Rye" or "Tropic of Cancer".

The new version is everything that's wrong with Hollywood. The prevailing attitude is "If it makes money, we'll give it the green light." Put some pubescent eye-candy in it, throw in some dance sequences and the baby-sitting money of America's teenage girls will make it the highest grossing movie of the year.

Just about everything you see in the movies is a remake or a mockery of the days of black and white ... most especially the comedy!  With all of the advances in technology and the obvious differences in literary genres it's a true shame too!  There is a great deal about this world that could be put into script and made visual to broaden the world's view of why one only need be born in a different land to lose the knowledge of his very being!

The problem is Lack of Original Ideas and Too Much SFx/Computer Generation which allows them to spit out a movie in 2 months instead of 2 yrs. Severe lack of Quality Actors. Never liked Footloose, Dirty Dancing, St Elmo's Fire and others, so I don't care if remade or not but, judging by some of the recent remakes out there [Journey to the Centre of the Earth for example] I think they may just accomplish something I never thought possible, Make a bad movie Worse!

There are a couple of problems in Hollywood.  First, pretty much every story has been told.  So essentially nothing is original anymore.

Next, money has become so important that Hollywood flocks to remakes of TV shows and movies because  they are less of a risk.  They come with a built in audience because many are already familiar with it.

PS: The orginal Footloose was crap.  So the remake can't be worse!

#34 | 1827 days ago

Every since the 2007- 2008 Writers Guild Of America strike they have been struggling to make run to the movies! If your old sonny will you grab my cane?

Besides Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood, and Spike Lee, Hollywood directors/producers don't have a clue as to creativity.

I think at best they are coming up with different ways to tell the same story.  And that is a stretch in your direction.

I will say there are SOME original ideas out there still.  But they seem to be few and far between.

My kids LOVE the original Footloose movie.  We found it on DVD about 2 years ago in the WalMart bins, and they watch it at least once a month.  I can only think the remake will be incredibly disappointing.

I was about 14 when the first one came out and I loved it!  I do think its too soon and they will probably wreck it!  I also like The Toy, and even moreso liked Mannequin and St. Elmo's Fire.  (ask me about the Andrew McCarthy stories sometime)

Oh damn, I knew someone would mention St. Elmo's fire and Mannequin - My kids love them both, and Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles.  When we found "About Last Night" in the WalMart bin, however, even though it's in the same era, I had to hide it....
