If you're asking me who has the best resume, I'd say Wagner. If you're asking me who I'd want in his prime for one season, it's Alex Rodriguez.

How hard is it to pick a juiced up A-rod in his prime. If I wanted to put fans in the stands I'd go with Oz. I'd build a franchise around Rip.

Jeter?

Who has the most rings??? Ozzie was the best defensive shortstop and Ripken was The Iron Man, but I have to say Jeter is the best All-Around shortstop to p[lay the game!!!!
Derek Jeter

I won't start to argue against Honus Wagner. He played in a entirely different era, one that I don't have enough knowledge of. But Jeter plays on the Bronx Bombers. He never played on a team as bad as Cal Ripken. Cal Ripken has always been the best player on his team no question.

3,415 hits, 8 NL batting titles, and the fist shortstop voted into Baseball's Hall of Fame...on the very first ballot.

Oh, and his baseball card recently sold for 2.5 million $$$$$$$.

All are excellent choices! I went with The Wizard for defense (Whitey once said he takes away over 100 RBIs a year) and hit for average, with the occasional pop (GO CRAZY FOLKS! GO CRAZY!).

Ripken for power, Wagner for OPS. Jeter is on the cusp, but a solid 4th in this race!

I take Jeter for:
  • his leadership,
  • his sense of calm in October,
  • his clutch hitting in October/November,
  • his 5 rings,
  • the fact he is the all-time hits leader in Post season history
  • he's the team's all-time hits leader for the most storied franchise in all major sports
  • His clutch play in 2001 playoffs in game 3 vs Oakland.to cut Jeremy Giambi at the plate

Ripken, then Wagner, then everyone else. period.

The first three reasons are reasonable but debatable.

As for the others...

5 rings.  Not a factor.  That's a team thing.  Not an individual thing.
Post season hit leader?  Are you kidding?  There are many more playoff games today AND more teams make the playoffs.  It's way easier to collect post season hits now than ever before.  Not a factor.
The mere fact that he played for the Yankees is not a legitimate reason to pick him.

The final reason is huge play, yes.  But ONE great play in a DIVISION series (not even an LCS or WS) contributes to him being the best?

This is all how a person feels about a certain player for there is no way to really judge who is the best. If I had a team which plays on the turf I will take Ozzie, Wagner, Jeter, A-rod, Ripken, and I know he has not had a great career yet but the Giants Crawford I would take for park which play on grass. Crawford will be like Ozzie who saved way more runs with his range and amazing play.
