Gentleman, Start your Engines for the Daytona 500

by Scott Scott 2/16/072 Comment Comments »

Gentleman, Start your Engines for the Daytona 500 PhotoFor those of you who've been going thru Nascar withdrawal, its time to rejoice because the 2007 season has arrived.  First up, the Daytona 500, the Super Bowl of the Nascar season.  This 500 mile race is set at the Daytona International Speedway, a 2.5 mile superspeedway that serves as a backdrop to a 480 acre motorsports complex, known to racing fans as "The World Center of Racing".

The most important factor to racing at Daytona is a drivers ability to draft and draft well.  Racing at Daytona seems to be two to three wide and after a few laps of racing, several cars will begin to break away from the pack in a single file.  Cars behind the break away must draft back to the lead pack in order to gain distance and time.  Lose the draft at any point or lose a lap and you may as well hang it up for the day.  More then likely, this race will be won by the driver who has great engine package, knows how to draft, has a pit crew that is consistently good on pit stops with no errors and one who can survive the biggest concern....the "BIG ONE."

Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Michael Waltrip have all won at  Daytona twice but Jimmie Johnson has the best overall record here in the last 10 races run, including a win in last years race.  Dale Earnhardt Jr has one win, 4 top 5's and 7 top 10's and along with Stewart, Gordon and Johnson, they will be the heavy favorites to win this race.

Other drivers to watch :

Kevin Harvick - leads the RCR group with 2 top 5's and 4 top 10's

Kurt Busch - 5 top 5's in 10 races, needs to be Penske's top dog

Elliot Sadler - 2 top 5's, 4 top 10's, should do more with Evernham

Ricky Rudd - back in racing with Yates, should show immediate results with better equipment

My Pick - Tony Stewart - won the shootout and the 125

Darkhorse - Ken Schrader - probably wont win, but has 3 straight top 12's while driving for the Wood brothers

Who does everyone else think will win??  Post your thoughts on the winners, losers and the sleepers....

Known in some circles as the "Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing", the Daytona 500 is widely considered to be NASCAR's most important and prestigious race, despite the fact that it starts off the Nextel Cup season.  The Daytona 500 is a 200-lap, 500 mile NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race held annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida and its past winners include Jimmie Johnson (2006), Jeff Gordon (2005), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2004) and Michael Waltrip (2003).  Who will win this year's first Nextel Cup event and take home the Harley J. Earl trophy??  Which drivers will have the best finishes??  Predict the following questions for the 2007 version of "The Great American Race"

Yes, we do this for every race and Ty will award medals to those who finish in the top 3.  The challenge will have basically the same format each week, with minor tweaks once drivers start getting points.  Eventually, driver standings will determine questions 11-19.  Also, look for a nascar blog the week before a race, which will preview the upcoming race and offer some insight for those who play fantasy nascar
