July 4th....the day we officially flipped England the bird. (Edited 06/29/09 01:03PM by )

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

 

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

 

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

 

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

 

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

 

What kind of men were they?

 

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

 

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

 

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

 

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

 

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

 

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.


Far to often we forget or take for granted that FREEDOM is still not free.  July 4th is seen as a time to BBQ and blow up fireworks but how ofter do people take the time to remember what it is really about???  So, WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING THIS SATURDAY, JULY 4th, TO CELEBRATE THE INDEPENDENCE OF AMERICA?

First Mooser, I want to thank you very much for reminding EVERYONE what is on the line! Too many people forget what we are fighting for EVERY day. We forget those who lost their lives in the war for Independence from the English tyranny.
I am going to a massive cookout and band bash! But, I have always quietly remembered those who sacrifice and have sacrificed to have made us free and who do their all every day to keep us that way!
I am DAMNED PROUD to be an AMERICAN!
(Even if I am Native American and they raped and pillaged our land).

I am always amazed at how our country  was formed and the foresight that the founders had when framing the declaration of Independence.  So for all of my countrymen who have and are serving in the military every year we have a nice BBQ with all the trimmings fireworks and always have at least a little talk about all the people who have died so that we can have the freedoms we so often take for granted here.

I've done a lot of reading about the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  Thanks for sharing this, many people I am sure are learning much of this for the first time. 

It's a shame that we don't do a better job of teaching our kids about the sacrifices our forefathers made for the freedom we take so much for granted, and are so willing to give up.

Freedoms never free, God Bless the USA, teach our children well, go blow stuff up.   Happy 4th!!!!

Hmmmm normal every day people giving up everything for freedom...sounds eerily familiar.

It is amazing how much people repeat the past. Perhaps if we knew our own history more, we would understand others (and stay out of their problems as much as possible) as well as appreciate what we have in this country.

This Saturday I will put on my Flag tank and shorts, load up my car, and join my family and friends for a day of food, spirits, and things that go boom. Happy Independence Day!

Thanks for the quick history reminder. I remember that in high school history. Being a proud CANADIAN, this week will be hard on system, celebrating Canada Day on July 1st and 72 hrs later, recover and party again on the 4th to celebrate for our friends south of the 49th.

Will be working this 4th of July, so will miss out on most of the festivities.  It's also my younger brother's birthday, so I get to miss that also.  But usually the family would all get together to celebrate both.  To celebrate and remember the commitment and sacrifice these men ( and their families ) made to fight for the freedoms we all now enjoy.  To rib my brother for getting older.  To enjoy a great meal.  To just spend quality time with friends and family and give thanks that we have one another.  And to never forget those who came before us who have fought for our freedoms.
I have to work Saturday...thanks for reminding me what I will be missing.

Huge Picnic with friends and afterward go watch fireworks then 2 weeks later have another Huge shindig with friends and family here at our place and watch the fireworks show again right in my yard the the town puts on!

I will spend the morning watching a parade of heroes... the troops who have fought and will continue fighting for our freedom... (Wherever that parade may be...)

I will spend the day barbecuing and swimming with friends and family, thankful to have our health and good food. (And beer.)

The evening will be filled with sparklers, fountains, smoke bombs and other reasonably safe exploding toys! :-)

The night is reserved for fireworks along the St. John's River, watching my girls' eyes light up with every color and every explosion!

Sometime during the day I will listen to "God Bless The U.S.A." by Lee Greenwood, trying to swallow the lump in my throat as I do every year.

And at bedtime I will humbly thank my husband for serving our country, as I would like to personally thank every man and woman who defends our freedom at any costs!

will let others do the blowing up, and thank every service man that I pass/passes by me !!

I am not an American - but my country India too went through the turmoils of slavery at the hands of the Britishers.  Mooser, you have named only 56 that History has helped everyone remember.  But what about those unsung heroes who - maybe - have done more for the freedom of your Country, as many had done for mine.  Wouldn't it be improper it those unknown soldiers of autonomy and liberty are not given their due remembrance respects. I humbly feel that AMERICA AND AMERICANS MUST REMEMBER ALL THOSE - KNOWN AS WELL AS UNKNOWN - HEROES WHO THOUGHT OF FREEDOM FOR OTHERS BEFORE SELF.

Just like you remember your freedom fighters, we too pay homage, on our Independence day - 15th August - every year, to all those who laid down their lives. so that we may live free.  India and America are the two biggest democracies in the world - LONG LIVE OUR FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND MAY WE CHERISH THEIR MEMORIES TILL TIME IMMEMORIAL.

I don't usually do a lot on the 4th any more. I do remember the sacrifices that our forefathers made. I've spent most of my life in the Army....I know a lot of good men who have served and do serve their country well. Our military is at war....times are tough....I hope people do not forget.

people today willing to take the risks, to put their lives on the line as well as all that they own, for the sake of Freedom?  My answer is 
yes!  And I say this, holding my son-in-law in high regard, proud, who joined the US Navy, and is currently serving in Virginia.  All that

Every year I prep myself for a good fireworks display and Patriotic music.  If you can believe it, Oceanside, a town largely inhabited by family and friends of US Marines (50,000+ in this area), they've opted to cut from the budget the thousands of dollars it would cost to light up a bunch of fireworks.

If this were my hometown of Houston, or even Austin, were to do this I'd say nothing ... but it isn't.  Most of the men stationed on the base I work on have done at least one deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan.  Of those that haven't, a great deal of them will within the next year.  Bit of a shame that they won't have this weekend to see a great fireworks display unless they travel to a city who hasn't banned it, or cut it from their budget, since fireworks are outlawed in Cali.

What's interesting is that every Thursday there is a street fair in the center of town.  All traffic is bipassed and street vendors fill the area along with musicians.  Apparently nobody's thought about utilizing such fairs to raise the money to finance a fireworks display for, of all holidays, Independence Day! 

Oh well, I guess we're lucky they didn't run out of cash so much to cancel New Years ... right???

Every Freedom we enjoy is because of the sacrifices made by our Fathers and Fore Fathers. Weather for the signing of the Declaration of Independence, or the Hero's of the Wars fought to keep us free and safe. They did this so there sons and daughters would live in a free nation, with the opportunities to be what they wanted to be. When you celebrate this freedom, you are flaunting this freedom in the face of oppression. Party on Dude ... and Dudesses. but remember the greatness of your ancestors.

i will probably hang out at home and think about our freedom we recieved at a price and pray that my father that is battling to stay alive right now and who fought for feedom of others in Korea will still be here for years to come and celebrate the fourth with us because right now he doesnt even know that it is the 4th god bless us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I attended my cousins wedding he is quite a decorated soldier glad we have not lost him he has been serving his country since he was 17 his parents signed for him. God bless all Soldiers, family's and the pup for making mom's day a good one!
