What would you tell your athlete daughter / sister?
The discussion that has ensued since Richard Petty's statement regarding women in Nascar has brought me to a curosity. So many men feel that women can't and won't ever compete against men equally and succeed. So I'm wondering, if your daughter / sister/ friend was talented in a sport and had a drive and ambition to succeed against men, what would you tell her?

Come on, I don't understand why gender is still an issue anymore. There are better women for every sport in the world than some of the males that are getting paid way to much to play them today. There are girls that are built like a brick sh*t house that I would not want to ever line up against on the grid iron. I think its time to let the small mindedness that all sports should be gender exclusive go the way of the dodo bird. Thats my two cents anyways

If we're not talking about blocking a 280 pound defensive end, though NASCAR, Formula, NHRA Drag Racing, etc. are far more demanding than they appear you are not taking on a male opponent directly.  A driver is maximaxing the performance of the car under the track's conditions, in racing or any other sport that is not bulk/strength based a woman can compete as an equal.  I see no reason a woman couldn't play baseball against men, in Little League our catcher Suzie was a great player, lots of baseball players are not really fast or strong.

I auctually wanted to pose this poll to all sports not just Nascar but it would only let me choose one sport to place it in.

I just couldn't begin to tell my child male or female that their aspirations are invalid and mis placed. And I didn't. My 8 yr old daughter played summer league basketball last year and this year and wants to play football this fall. She already plays it with the older boys on the block so I see no need to not let her do it.

i agree with akaneo2003... the gender sports should be no more... anyone should be able to compete in what ever sport they want... if they have the drive and heart females can do as good if not better than men...

I'm not sure I could phrase it any better, if you truly strive for it anything is possible.  Let the world be your oyster and you have my support!
