Does Emmitt Smith deserve to get in to the HOF in 2010 when he is eligible. (Edited 02/19/07 04:59PM by Seth)
Call it a morbid curiosity.  After reading so many people's opinion on Emmitt Smith, I have decided to find out how many people felt that he did not deserve to get into the HOF when he was eligible.

Listen if he doesn't get in on his first ballot, then the NFL should extend drug testing to anyone who has a vote. The guy is the all-time rushing yards leader!! You can't be serious.

He's only overrated in the "Best RB Ever" conversations. But you don't have to be the best RB ever to make the Hall of Fame.

That's true. well on the you don't have to be the best RB to get in.  On the other hand I was still sure someone would say no.   BTW, I no I said I was going to make this poll for you, but I really got curious if anyone actually believed he didn't deserve to get in.  Curiosity got the best of me, I guess.  So I had to see.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a resounding number of yes answers, but the fact that not one person, not even a Giants or Philly fan that said no.  Seriously didn't you think at least one person would say No?

It is a little surprising. If Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn didn't get unanimously voted in for the Baseball HOF on their first try, then it wouldn't have shocked me to see someone like Emmitt lose a vote or two.

Justification #1:
Art Monk is very deserving, IMO. He has been waiting for almost 10 years. Emmitt Smith isn't 10 times the player that Art Monk is. Therefore, he shouldn't get in 10 times faster.
Justification #2:
He may deserve to be inducted, but I voted no, because he doesn't deserve to be inducted unanimously. If Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn can't get in unanimously in baseball, then Emmitt(the Cal Ripken of football) doesn't deserve the unanimous honor either.

Well...I guess that's why I answered "yes". Sure, I could use a little twisted circular logic to give reasons to NOT vote for him, but seriously...what's the point? He deserves it, and of course he shouldn't have to wait.

Neither would Barry Sanders with the Arizona Cardinals. I'll agree that the offensive line is very deserving but it does take a real running back to take advantage of a good line. A real running back has to have great awareness and within a split second know which hole is the best exact one. I've heard it plenty of times when a commentator will show that the running back missed a great hole and 9 times out of 10 that running back isn't a great one.

He did something else that Emmitt never did, too.

He fumbled the ball 44 times in his career. Emmitt only fumbled it 38 times, even though he played 5 more years, 72 more games, and got almost twice as many touches.

There you go, Cowboys fans...I defended Emmitt Smith. How was that?

I expect any fan of any team to like their team over someone else's.  I am a Cowboys fan first and foremost, then it would be New England and Tampa, because my mom lives in Tampa.  But I know being a Cowboys fan means more people dislike my team, so excuse me when I poke a little fun of those people as well.  It's not personal, I actually like the old 49er teams, I only have animosity against one team, but nothing against most of the fans of any team.

Bandwagon, I like the New England Patriots because of this young QB that was really impressive, I assure you that's about it.  I like Tampa Bay, because my mother lives in Tampa Bay, and they have interesting people on the team.  I am A DALLAS COWBOYS FAN.  I have been a Dallas fan before SB XXVII, and have been since.  What if I like a team (I am only listed as a Cowboys fan) I am band wagon fan.  How about I wish them well?  Kinda like this year, when I pulled for Indianapolis over New England, I guess that was bandwagon.  Why are you fan of the Bucs, thought it was just a good thing to do?  Maybe your dad was a fan so you felt you should be to, that isn't jumping on a bandwagon now is it?

Okay first of all, I didn't jump on the Pittsburgh bandwagon, because they won the SB, and I haven't done it for the Indianapolis Colts, though I wanted to see them win the big game.  So I fail to see your point.  I haven't gone to a single Dallas game, shame I value my rent and a place to live in more than the ability to go see my team play.  I would love to go to a game though.  Nice rubbing it in though.  As for bandwagon, I am a Dallas Cowboys fan, if I were a Bandwagon fan, I would not keep saying the Cowboys were my team for as long as I called myself that.  So again, what is your point.  And what in the heck did I say to you to deserve you attacking me?

In the event that anyone has ANY legitimate questions, I shamelessy plagerized this from Dallascowboys.com:

In 15 seasons, Emmitt Smith made an impact on the NFL that few players can match at any position or in any era. As the NFL's all-time rushing leader, Smith won four NFL rushing titles, three Super Bowl titles and a league (1993) and Super Bowl (XXVIII) MVP award. He was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, with only Barry Sanders (10) having been selected more times among NFL running backs.

Smith is the seventh player in NFL history to carry the title of all-time rushing leader, and he is the only player in NFL history to rush for more than 18,000 yards. Smith is also the NFL's career rushing touchdowns leader with 164, and he stands second in league annals in total touchdowns with 175, trailing the all-time leader, Jerry Rice, by 32.

The first player in NFL history with five straight seasons with over 1,400 rushing yards, Smith and Jim Brown are the only players with seven straight 10-touchdown seasons to start their career. With 1,021 yards rushing in 2001, Smith became the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in 11 consecutive seasons and the first to post 11 1,000-yard rushing seasons in a career. He is also the NFL's alltime leader in rushing attempts with 4,409. With a then NFL record 25 touchdowns in 1995, Smith scored 100 career touchdowns in just six seasons, the fastest anyone in league history has reached that mark (he tied Brown's NFL record by scoring 100 touchdowns in just 93 career games). His 164 career rushing touchdowns in 226 games gives him a 0.73 touchdown-per-game scoring average, second behind Brown's 0.90 for tops among the all-time rushing touchdown scorers (John Riggins 0.59 and Walter Payton 0.58 are next on the list). Smith's longevity and ability to score touchdowns have combined to give him three of the five best touchdown totals against a single opponent in league history. His 25 career scores against the Arizona Cardinals is the third best total by a player against an opponent since 1970, followed by his 24 scores against Washington and his 23 against the N.Y Giants.

Smith is one of only three players in Cowboys history with three career 100-point seasons, and he is the only non-kicker to accomplish the feat. His value to his team's success can be seen in the clubs' 101-26 mark (93-24 in regular season) when he carried the ball 20-or-more times a game and 65-18 record (58-18 in regular season) when he rushed for 100 yards. The century mark became a big number in Smith's career, having rushed for 100 yards in 155-of-326 games dating back to high school (45-of-49 at Escambia High School, 25-of-34 at Florida, 81-of-202 at Dallas, including playoffs, and two-of-25 at Arizona). His 45 100-yard games in high school is still the national record, and in NFL annals, Smith's 78 100-yard rushing games makes him the NFL's all-time leader - just ahead of Payton (77) and Sanders (76). Included in Smith's leaguerecord 78 regular season 100-yard rushing games are 18 days with over 150 yards (the fourth highest total of 150-yard games in NFL history).

Smith has rushed for over 100-yards against 23 of the 33 NFL teams he faced. In addition, he rushed for 2,466 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in his 15- year career, his best output against any single opponent. That total ranks second since 1970 for running backs against one team. Smith also has the third and fifth best totals in that category.

Yeah, well that's interesting, Wade Phillips hired Jason Garrett's brother on as a Tight Ends coach.  Talking about really making it a family environment.  Dat, Wes, the other Garrett, is there anyone else that he wants to add on who has some sort of connection either with the team, his family or someone on the teams family?

It's the job of the fan to be blindly optimistic about their team.  If we weren't then well we wouldn't be fans, just spectators.  I for one have been optimistic since seeing the emergence of Tony Romo, and the shaping of an improving defense.

You know I would say if I had to pick a team to despise the most it would be the Eagles, but I have made it a point not to hold a grudge against any teams fans.  Although if the Eagles lost every game in a single season, I would shed no tears.  Mostly though I share your views of the NFC East, the rivalry is the best in the NFL.

#1 Art Monk, liked the guy, but come on! Don't compare apples to oranges.

#2 Even more of apples to oranges comparison. Baseball is totally different when HOF is conscerned. Cal was simply iron man. Emmett was simply THE ALL TIME RUSHING LEADER!!! Alright, you are probably right, I was thinking the TD record which came shortly after Super Bowl XXX.  He however holds a lot more career records then just All Time Leading Rusher.  My point is he didn't stay in to beat the record because he would have retired right after breaking them.  He actually just liked the game that much.

Well, like I said, that might explain why he stayed on the Cowboys so many years, but he broke the record on the Cowboys, so there was no need for him to go to Arizona.  So I doubt for that reason alone he did it just to break another record.
