Self-love is vital for self-esteem and is very important in the development of healthy relationships with other people... you just gotta be careful with it, I hear it can make you go blind...

This is uncontentious. There's nobody who don't love themselves. We might abuse our body, but we are doing all this to satiate our lust for something arising out of self-love...

There is an old saying that says:   " I would love to buy that person for what they are worth and sell them for what they think they are worth."   Loving yourself , i don't think is the greatest of flatterers.

When we love ourselves fully  & unconditionally, we throw open the channels between ourselves & the world to give and receive love.

I quote below two lines from a poem, 'ELEGY ON THE DEATH OF A MAD DOG' I had learned in school about 30 years ago -
(In this poem a mad dog bites a priest well known for hypocrisy - and usually humans do not survive in such a case - but the irony is that the mad dog dies - and the poet had scripted this elegy in lament).  The lines are about the priest :

"The naked every day he clad, when he put on his clothes."

This is an example of self-love I recollected from 3 decades ago.

People with ego and self esteem gives rise to your poll query - Self-love is the greatest of all flatterers........

Such people have the following agenda where "Nobody likes to be told what to do and what not to do" !  More than flattery, they have a sense of self image and self opinion.

They have self love for :
1.  what they think is right,
2.  what they write is right,
3.  what they do is right,
4.  what they decide is right,
5.  what they approve is right,
6.  what they love is right,
7.  what they feel is right is right,
8.  what they infer is right,
9.  what they comment  is right, and,
10.whatever right is right, is right.

So Suji Bella, if these guidelines are followed, achieved, attained and accomplished, then nobody may call your query a fallacy.

If I may be bold and open a portal to my inner soul...........Self love is not a given.  It has to be mirrored back to us by parents, siblings, friends, etc.  those are our mirrors.  My mirrors were broken.....what was mirrored back to me was shame, guilt, flaws I have, and many I didn't.  It was mirrored back to me that I should hate myself.  Recently, life has put me through many trials, as each lesson is learned, I have begun to care for myself in a much deeper way.  No one should be raised as I was, but for those of you who felt that twinge of pain that I felt when I read this poll.......there is hope, where there is love.

I agree with jes_api ... all kidding aside some do expect to receive more than they give and that is not fair to those that give more than receive.

"WE MAKE A LIVING BY WHAT WE GET, BUT WE MAKE A LIFE BY WHAT WE GIVE." - Norman McEwan One must love thy self before you are able to love others.  All persons on this earth have suffered some kind of drama...some more than others. But if a person cannot move forward for the good of oneself...they will never know how to LOVE...for their hearts will be filled with self pity, self blame and not know their self worth. I AM WORTHY TO BE LOVED FOR I AM LOVE!!! meow meow =^_^=
