Please get spine check ups!!!! (Edited 08/19/09 09:12AM by SusanVette)
This was what my great niece's spine in 2008 .She complained about her back & ribs hurting. Her Mom just gave her pain killers. She said something to her Grandma & she looked at her spine. The X-ray on the left is what it looked like -The one on the right is after 3 hr of surgery & 6 months in a body cast. She was only 19 when she noticed anything .Now she's a college student in Springfield, Mo.Studying to be a therapeutic therapist. she was a model until this happened.Than she got her true calling in life to help others.
You should always check your child's back - this problem arrives in the adolescent years. So please get your child's back checked out regularly by a chiropractor.

Wow that is an amazing difference. Finally a story that came out with a good ending. Your niece should feel very very blessed that she had it corrected and everything turned out good.  I hope she succeeds in everything she does.

Was she suffering from scoliosis?
#9 | 1705 days ago

That is some really scary stuff. It takes a special kind of bravery to take a negitive and make something positive out of it to help others. You must be very proud of her. Good story.

So this isn't scoliosis? and no one could have noticed this if f she bent over?   I'm glad they caught it, and I hope it works out great for her.  I've seen the scars on someone from the surgery, and it ain't pretty.

I check this out a lot, I plan on buying some of their products when I get a chance.
The problem with back pain (and to a larger extent, most medical problems in the U.S.) is no one takes the time to figure out WHY, instead of just trying to stop the pain.

The schools out here in Arizona don't test for scoliosis. I remember as a kid back in Milwaukee, midterm you got scoliosis, lice, and hearing &eye test! Just shows you how the school systems are going down! I most definitely will have my kids doctor check them! Thanks for sharing, and I am happy your niece had a happy outcome to this and that she is now helping others!!!

An MRI should have been able to picked this up by at least age 12, this is a chronic condition that only gets worse as the child
matures. If a child is in pain, it is extremely important to do testing until the root cause is determined. If it had been caught
earlier surgeries would have been far less extreme.

This is one of those wonderful stories where instead of developing a self-pitying attitude, it becomes something
constructive that benefits everyone. Thanks for sharing this, and give my best to your niece.

Wow Thank You for sharing and May God see her through her Journey to help others.I pray she continues to have Good Health from here on out.She is a very Brave young Lady.I admire her courage and will to help others.I am one of those overly protective Moms so my Boys get checked with the least little wimper. My 8year old has migraines and is on medicine for that.I never thought a kid that young could have this kind of headache.Plus he has had a knot on top of his head since he was 2 months old that I make them keep an eye on even though they say it is a comformity of the skull..I want take any chances with my 2 boys health.Again she is an inspiration.God Bless her and God Bless you for sharing her story.

There is several types of spinal diseases! These are types of Scoliosis:
SPINAL BIFIDA
SPINAL FUSION
SPINAL STENOSIS
CEREBRAL PALSY
MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
IDIOPATHIC
DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE

Everyone's spine has natural curves, they are what make our shoulders round and make our lower back curve slightly inward. However, in some people their spine also curves from side to side and this condition is called Scoliosis. In these cases, unlike poor posture, these curves can't be corrected simply by standing up straight.  Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine with its name derived from the Greek word for curvature
.
#26 | 1705 days ago

Wow -- thanks Biker Baby for the reminder!

My 12 year old daughter just had her sports physical (she's playing volleyball and basketball this year) and I'm certain her pediatrician didn't even ask if she had any back pain, problems, etc.

I'm glad your niece is on the mend and has found her calling.  Best Wishes!

Thank God they caught it when they did. I know how she feels i too went under a 12 hour back surgery  it was a 360 bi level fussion i had one disk that was completly shattered and one was ruptured so badly all that could be done was have rods and screws put into my back which later had to be removed due to wearing through my skin because of my size.I also have a steel plate over  the front of my sping which was put in through my stomach.(Still there). So yes please have your spine checked. However mine was due to an injury from being slammed into a door knob.Kudos to her for wanting to help others.Thankfuly you can hardly see the scares from mine
#29 | 1705 days ago

They checked that here when my kids were in school.  I don't know if they still do that.   Congrats on your neices' calling.  Good luck to her.

It's a shame that  chiropractors are not as recognized in this society as they should be. Powerful lobby groups are shutting this profession out of the mainstream of medical treatment. These chiropractors are trusted souls .
Let's activate to get chiropractor treatment into the new healthcare proposal.

Nearly 90% of the above comments are expressions of gratefulness for the medical information provided - and for those who were ignorant, to take precautions and remedial steps, if and where necessary.

I know I am a bit too late on the scene, but I received the poll invitation now (no grudge or resentment for anything to anyone),

I did not want to lose any more time and decided to be a part in sharing this genuine and helpful information, that is actually a yeoman  service (a duty characterized by loyalty, diligence, and reliability) to mankind, especially to fans of the Q, by Cindy (Bikerbaby).

This information will go a long way in preparing parents of children, who are suffering, or, for whom there is a need to take necessary precautionary and remedial measures, wherever necessary.

God bless all of you above for being so understanding, indulgent and appreciative of this informative and educative material.

My prayers and thoughts are with you.  Thank God for your many blessings!!!!!

I have a back problem myself, they wanna operate and I'm scared, but what your Great-niece must have gone through..........well all I can say is that she has an angel watching over her and she has shown tremendous courage.

God works in mysterious ways..........she can now affect and help far more people than she would have in the modelling industry.

May God bless her and keep her and I hope by you sharing your story,  that this type of Back deformity can be picked up at an earlier age/stage.

Do a lot of research. I suffer from headaches and had one NS talking about fusion around the c4-c5 area and saw another one with his name on the wing of a local hospital who barely spent two minutes looking at me and started talking about a shunt with a cavalier attitude of removing a  hangnail.

When did they stop checking for Scoliosis in AZ? When I was in Middle School, here in AZ, I remember  having to have a Scoliosis check. Wait maybe the school nurse thought I was sexy, and just wanted to see me without my shirt. I might have to find out if everyone had to have this done. If not I am gonna sue her and the school district. I feel dirty now.

Thats a great reminder.  AND GENTLEMEN, scoliosis happens most often in women, but men are not immune when it comes to the condition.  I know someone, a man, who has scoliosis so bad that He is almost bent in half at the waist from the curvature of His
spine.  Being a male, he was never examined as a child and as such was not aware of a choice to opt for surgery or not.  Now in his mid 60's, he is unable to stand upright at all, and even when sleeping curls up much like a crab, unable to stretch out.
