Assuming Donovan McNabb is not 100% by Week 3, which backup QB would you start? (Edited 09/15/09 09:01PM by Drakesrake_77)
This is a hard one.  As an Eagles fan, I'd like to see Kevin Kolb finally show something in his upcoming start in week 2 against New Orleans.  However, since McNabb has gone down, the Eagles have cut AJ Feely, signed Jeff Garcia, and moved Michael Vick from Inactive, to the active 53 man roster. 

Everyone knows that Jeff Garcia is somewhat of a hero to a lot of Philly fans after he took them to the 2nd round of the playoffs in 2006, but he is coming of a dismal performance in Tampa Bay last year when he failed to defeat the 4-12 Oakland Raiders to secure a playoff spot; ironically setting the Eagles up to make the playoffs.  

And of course, everyone is anxious to see what Michael Vick still has to offer this Eagles offense after his long and much-publisized stay in the pen, and Week 3 is when he gets officially reinstated.  So, amidst all this controversy, who do you think should get the nod for the starting QB spot in Week 3 vs. the Chiefs.  

One thing is for certain, Donovan McNabb had better be ready to play when he returns.  The last thing he needs, is to go down with another injury soon after coming back from this one, and open the door for one of these other guys to step in.  McNabb is my guy.  I think he's the best QB they have ever had in Philadelphia, but there are a lot of Pro Bowls between his backups! I just hope he stays out long enough to come back 100%, and ready to go.  Otherwise, he'll probably be hearing chants of,  "We want Vick," AND "We want Garcia" perhaps at the same time!

I respectfully diagree with that. I think Kolb has done well this season, and he is underappreciated by Eagles fans. I think he should start week 5, and I believe that he will keep getting better. Vick is soo not ready to play a full game, and since Garcia is no longer an option, if McNabb cannot play, Kolb will get it done.

 I have to go with Vick.  I know he was out of shape in pre season, but I think once the adrenaline of a real game hit him, he'll be able to move the ball along with their talented backs in the backfield, better than Garcia and Kolb.  More threats for defenses to worry about.  Westbrook and McCoy can probably carry them to a win regardless, but I am very interested to see what Reid decides to do here.  It's the story of the season so far in my opinion.

 They should go with Garcia, he is the most proven and has the best career of all the rest but I think if McNabb doesn't start it will be Mike Vick.

I agree, besides he is really talented and he could (if given the chance) to take the Eagles all the way.

McNabb is one good hit from "season over", but he has played hurt many times before.  Garcia may have lost a a step, and it showed in pre-season with the Bucs.  It might be time for Vick to step up and take over and if he can focus on the game, will all the pending distractions around him, it might work.

lol...Maybe after this weekend. : ) Hopefully you are right.  I don't really think Vick is totally ready yet, and the fans don't need another excuse to start chanting for Jeff Garcia at this point.  I think it would be awesome to see Kolb come out and prove that he's the true #2 guy, but the odds are stacked against him big time with 7 combined Pro Bowls sitting on the sidelines.  I agree with you- Reid has his hands full keeping McNabb's ego pumped up while he's got two proven quality QB's as backups.  Has any team in the history of the NFL ever had a quarterbacking crew this good!!?? I think not.  I couldn't make up my mind on this question either.

 vick would be a beast and i really want to see him play but garcia would be my choice he knows the offense and the line and would be a good pocket passer as he led them to the 2006 playoffs, but i do want to see vick play. WHO DOESNT?

Yes- Vick will be eligible to play in Week 3 (vs. Chiefs).  I have to strongly disagree with you about your assessment of 70% Vick is better than McNabb.  Maybe 130% of Vick would be better than McNabb, but Donovan has always been a much better overall QB than Vick, even in the prime of Vick's career.

Be certain the McNabb will be back in there by Week 5 (Week 4 is their bye week).  So we aren't talking about salvaging a season with any of there backups yet.  The Eagles will probably win vs. Kansas City regardless of who they put under center.  The issue is really who gets the start in Week 3.  Weeks 5-16 will be without a doubt McNabb (barring injury)

Ok I didn't know wk 4 was the bye - you dodged a bullet with that timing. KC is beatable with Garcia/Vick for sure. It would be a dogfight with Kolb out there though. The Chiefs and Brodie Croyle played Baltimore pretty decently for awhile last week.

maybe i am being somewhat of an opptimist there because i feel that Vick needs this so bad. you may be correct in your evaluation.

vick still not cleared to play. kolb will go, and garcia after that. i think vick gets reevaluated after week 4

 despite the final score, I think Kolb showed he's pretty much where he needs to be- I think he's proven, at least to Andy Reid, that he's worthy of the #2 position.  If McNabb comes back next week, I see Garcia going away very soon.

McNabb's been to 5 NFC Championship games to Vick's 1.  By the way the Eagles won that game taking them to 1 Super Bowl to Vick's none.  McNabb is the better QB and wouldn't lose his job to Vick.

 I really liked kolb against the chiefs...that hes proven he good enough to beat a really bad team. i want to see him face a playoff contender!! I think he has the arm and the drive to be a great quarterback.  the way he looked against the chiefs i think mcnabb can expect to be traded.

Vick needs to be a starter to be effective and get a feel for the game as it developes. bringin him in for a couple plays isnt going to get him to where he was.  I would like to see him go out there and be the vick we used to watch but being a backup isnt going to get him there.

I respectfully diagree with that. I think Kolb has done well this season, and he is underappreciated by Eagles fans. I think he should start week 5, and I believe that he will keep getting better. Vick is soo not ready to play a full game, and since Garcia is no longer an option, if McNabb cannot play, Kolb will get it done.

I am just not seeing Vick being ready to a full game yet, I think he needs to ease in a liitle more b4 he takes the shot.
