FanIQ NFL Mock Draft: #1 Oakland Raiders

FanIQ NFL Mock Draft: #1 Oakland Raiders PhotoYou want the fans take on the NFL Draft, that's what you're going to get. Over the next 3 weeks we'll be conducting our own Mock Draft with fans of the respective teams (in most cases) playing GM. With the 1st pick, I'll be getting the draft underway. Unfortunately trades aren't an option ...

1st Pick, Oakland Raiders: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech

Strongly Considered: JaMarcus Russell, Joe Thomas

Explanation: Here's a guy ... ok I won't subject you to any more of that. Why not JaMarcus who appears the locked in choice? I've never been a fan of selecting QB's this high unless they are a sure thing. And despite all the measurables, Russell is far from such a title. I'm going to be weary of a guy who earned his draft status in just one nationally televised game. Russell made his fair share of bad decisions during his years at LSU. Arm strength and size mean nothing when poor decisions are made.

Honestly, if I were the Raiders I'd explore every conceivable option to trade down. Oakland needs players, emphasis on PLURAL.

Since that's not a likely option, Al Davis needs the best player available. Calvin Johnson fits that criteria this year. It's not ideal to build a team from the WR up, but Johnson appears to finally be a talented wide receiver that won't be a prima donna. Randy Moss is not going to be a Raider long term, but as least in the short run a Johnson/Moss pairing would be straight cash homey.

I'd give serious consideration to Joe Thomas as well. Robert Gallery hasn't lived up, but they're not giving up just yet. Plant Thomas on the other side for now and hopefully whoever plays QB will last 4 quarters. In the end it's Johnson. Raiders need playmakers, and a sure thing. Besides, I think a fine QB will be available at the top of Round 2.

Who would you have selected? Feel free to bash away.

Any chance you (the Raiders) now try to trade away Moss?

They won't take Johnson....that's the smart thing to do!
#3 | 2263 days ago

The smart thing to do would be drafting CJ and trading Moss, and try to pick up a QB in either Free Agency, or via trade.

Good work CF.
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU

I agree with this pick.  Johnson is as close to a sure thing as there is in this draft.  Russell is certainly not a sure thing.  While I know Johnson has to have someone to throw him the ball, he is a unique talent, and would be the smart pick!

Raiders need a QB not a WR. They have Randy Moss and what has he done? NOTHING. Why? THEY HAVE NO QUARTERBACK!

Draft Russell

Actually, they have a pretty horrible offensive line. That's more of a problem than QB.

Calvin Johnson is easily the best and biggest impact player in this draft. It's a solid pick.

The WR makes the QB a better player. So, maybe drafting another WR will make the QB better. Or good enough to alteast compete. I don't think drafting a QB is wise. Look at the QBs to come out of the drafts the last few years. Only a couple are capable of carying their team 5-7 years down the road. I don't think Russell is a QB that will be successfuly in 5 years. Sure he has a great arm and good accuracy, but I don't think he's capable of leading his team to the playoffs. The only QB I would take in the first round is Quinn, but he's obviously not going to be worth a top 10 pick. So, if stability at QB is what you want, trade down to #11 or so, and pick up Brady Quinn.

JaMarcus would die a painful death with that offensive line.

Well...he did say in ESPN's Sunday conversation that he could throw the ball 60 yards from his knees.  They should have asked how far he could throw it laying on his back...

At #1, with a horrible offense, the Raiders should take whoever they think is the best offensive player available, regardless of position.  That would be Calvin Johnson.

Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
#12 | 2263 days ago

I say Johnson in the first round, then a lineman in the second or if they feel the need to get a quarterback, get Drew Stanton from MSU.  He has proved that he can take a beating, his O-Line wasn't much better than Oakland's.
Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech

Even though I feel bad for JaMarcus going to that train wreck called the Oakland Raiders, Russell should and hopefully will go number one in the 2007 NFL draft.  The Raiders need a good, mobile quarterback that can deal with that poor excuse of an offensive line and that moronic Wide Receiver Randy Moss.

JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
#14 | 2263 days ago

unless they trade for a QB it will be Russell, however, I think Calvin Johnson would be the right choice, perhaps they can trade Moss for a QB and draft Johnson, that's what I would try to do
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
#15 | 2263 days ago

I am still saying Stanton in the second round, I think he could end up being a good QB in the NFL (if the Raiders don't kill him first)
Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
#16 | 2262 days ago

I'd like to believe Davis would contemplate taking Johnson, for the sake of being a standout at his position, but I believe they're still going with Jamarcus-- my indicators are if the Raiders are seriously considering Johnson, why haven't they upgraded the QB position thru trades or free agent signings???  (then again, draft day trades await!)
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
#17 | 2262 days ago

Raiders are desperate for  a QB.  Without that position, there's no way they draft a receiver #1 unless they trade him immediately for a couple of other high picks.  A receiver doesn't do any team a damn bit of good unless there is a QB that can get him the ball.

JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
#18 | 2262 days ago

I think Jamarcus Russel will be chosen, but if they want to trade Moss, Calvin Johnson could strongly be considered.
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
#19 | 2262 days ago

I think one way or another, Calvin Johnson will be the first pick in the draft.  If the Raiders can trade down, whoever moves up to #1 will be doing so for Johnson (not Russell).

I would hate to see Adrian Peterson go to the Raiders... I hope he at least goes to a team I don't dislike watching.
