Paulie's Crew Versus The Corleone Family? FUGETABOUTIT!
"As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster." - Henry Hill

"I'm gonna make him an offer he won't refuse."- Don Corleone

A few weeks back we imagined who would win a fight between John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, the results basically came down to a draw with all of us watching in horror (well, mock on-line horror) as these two legends went toe to toe.  Now, we take it to another level, family warfare.  Two of the greatest mob movies of all time are The Godfather (The Corleone Family) and Goodfellas (Paul Cicero's crew).  In the Godfather it was a battle for supremacy between the Corleone's and the other families while Goodfellas was the story of Henry Hill and his friends rise into the mob hierarchy.  Both movies had strong characters that excelled in violence so let me ask you Q Nation: WHO WOULD WIN A MOB WAR BETWEEN THESE TWO LEGENDARY "FAMILIES"?

I'll put my vote in for Goodfellas. Because I think It more accurately captured what it meant to be in the Mafia. The code of conduct (omerta), and in general how you lived your life as a gangster was much more detailed.

Ill take Paulies crew if for nothing else, they have Tommy.
NEVER bet against any crew with Joe Pesci.

I agree with Gina ... Goodfellas really portrayed the ganster life more graphically.  ... and Ray Liotta had the craziest laugh ...
Paulie's Crew.

I'm going with Corleone's......because I think they were "smarter" and I just want to be different.

Moose, me and my boys have had COUNTLESS debates on this topic. Do you know Sully, Big Irv or the Rocket!?! I always go Corleone because:
1) They were a true MADE MEN of power. La Familia runs deep & trumps all. Figuratively and litteraly. Good fellas were not made men. (That's how they got Pesci. He's was going to be made. *wink-wink* 'member? "...he's gone, nuttin' we could do 'bout'it.")
2) Deals with the evil, 'Dan Brown like' Papacy. 'nuff said.
3) On a street corner maybe, but See 1 and 2. That's juice.

(Factoring in all the movies. De Niro v. DeNiro - push. just because it is. It has to be right? right?? I do like Tommy/ Pesci over Sonny/ James caan. 'Micaheal" v. Sorvino - michael. The wild card was Andy garcia, "Zasa!!!" BTW, I always thought Christopher on The Sopranos was the "Spider" character arc, if he had not gotten popped in Goodfellas. 'timeline kinda works, just sayin... I could do this all night. I'm gonna stop now.)

After a long drawn out war of attrition, I think a third family would swoop in and dominate....

Paulie's regime had too many cracks within itself.  The Corleone's had a much better structure.  And as they handled all the other families, I think they could take on one or two more.
In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns.

Theirs no bigger mafia than the Govt.

I think it comes down to a couple side by side comparisons as to which was the more principled outfit. Principled mobsters? Yeah, I said it.

Drugs

Godfather: Don Corleone said that drugs was a dirty business and initially refuses to enter the narcotics game.

Goodfellas: Paulie slaps Henry in the face because of his involvement with drugs.

Advantage: Godfather - No Corleone ever got strung out on nose candy.

Personal vs. Business

Godfather: Sonny smacks Carlo around for beating Connie. Carlo is only killed as revenge for setting Sonny up.

Goodfellas: Tommy kills a made man because of an insult.

Advantage: Godfather - As Hyman Roth said about the killing of Moe Green, "It was business, not personal." Tommy let it become personal.

Outsiders vs. The Family

Godfather: Tom Hagen is adopted and made Consigliere by Don Corleone. Michael eventually puts Michael on the sidelines despite him being a brother. Carlo marries Connie but it is made clear that he will not be involved in the business. And the ultimate act of family "loyalty", Michael orders his brother Fredo killed for his betrayal (and possibly for his chronic worthlessness).

Goodfellas: Henry Hill and Jimmy Conway, despite being Irish, are intimately connected to Paulie's crew.

Advantage: Godfather - Michael was not above offending one brother and killing another to protect the family and its business. The lax admissions policy of the Cicero family makes them look like community college by comparison.

That is my unscientific, far too time-consuming, and poorly written analysis of the situation. The Corleone family was clearly the superior outfit.

The Corleone Family would win because they have more connections, but the Goodfellas gang would do sicker stuff to the people they murder, not to mention they were based on real mafia gangsters. Ray Liotta's character is still alive and living a secret free life.

Both sides would be too smart to let it last long and they would finally merge and rule the world.
