Without Mauer the Twins are nowhere instead of fighting for the division in the last week of the season.  My others are Derek Jeter and Brandon Inge.  Inge is not hitting for a big average but has had a lot of big hits for Detroit and plays a gold glove 3rd base.

Ask yourself this, would the Yankees have still made the postseason without Jeter?  The answer is yes because of how many players they bought over the offseason.  They may not have had the best record in baseball, but they still would've won the division with ease.  Now ask yourself if the Twins would've gotten as far as they did without Mauer, and the answer is a resounding NO.  Jeter isn't even the best player on the team.

Those of you who said anyone but Joe Mauer... you're wrong.

And those of you who said it was close... you're also wrong. The correct answer is Mauer in a landslide.

Mauer had an incredible year, especially considering he started it on the DL. And Teixeira made all the differance in the world to the Yankees. Without him they are pretty much the same as the 2008 team. Ichiro did well helping the Mariners to a respectable finish this year and Morales might be MVP in just about any other year. It was a toss up for 5th between Bay and Derek Jeter, but I have to give Bay his due.

Might one of the 91 people who omitted Ben Zobrist essay an explanation?  No American Leaguer save perhaps Mauer and Greinke (selon your favorite comprehensive metric) was worth as many wins, and yet he sits seventeenth in our voting, well adrift of, inter al., Youk, A-Rod, Longo, Jeter, and Ichiro, to each of whom he was superior offensively and defensively (in the latter in absolute terms, at least).  The repetition of this point in the sabermetrics blogosphere is, I know, annoying, but apparently necessary; one should not rest until every baseball fan realizes the worth of Zorilla (and, for that matter, of Zach Greinke; unless one is resolved not to include pitchers in his/her MVP ballot, there is no excuse for not putting Greinke at least third), who is, pace all those who declare this a one-man race, a perfectly plausible first choice.
1. Joe Mauer-MIN (.367 BA, 28 HR, 93 RBI, 1.038 OPS)  2. Ben Zobrist-TB (.288 BA, 25 HR, 85 RBI, .924 OPS)  3. Zack Greinke-KC (16-8, 2.06 ERA, 237 K, 223.1 IP)  4. Evan Longoria-TB (.282 BA, 32 HR, 110 RBI, .892 OP  5. Other 1
