Should Shaq Retire?
Should Shaq Retire? PhotoShaquille O'Neal in my opinion has been one of or "the" most dominant players in the NBA whether you like him or not.  He started a  very significant college career at LSU who I am a fan of.  18 years and couting in the NBA with the rookie of the year award for the Orlando Magic.  3 Championships with the L.A. Lakers, 1 with the Miami Heat, a season or two with the Phoenix Suns, and now teamed up with LeBron on the Cleveland Cavaliers.  He's had various all-star game selections as well.   It's obvious that when teams make moves to get Shaq that they want a shot at the NBA title.  But do you think Shaq is past his time with the new breed of center such as Dwight Howard or can he still get the job done without countless offensive fouls getting called on him?

I think he should have retired before this seaon but now that he's on the Cavs, whether they win it all or not. He should retire after this season.

Why should he Retire like Farve if someone is gonna give you alot of green why pass it up. Plenty of people want Bret Farve to Retire but who in there right mind would turn down 25 million dollars no one on this planet unless there is more cash of course

So that's what it is?  He's hanging around for the money? I can agree with that, but as far as ability he doesn't seem to be that dominant anymore.   Favre still has the ability to get it done but I believe he plays because he loves football more than the money. Those are my opinions though.

Here is Shaq's stat line from last season (http://www.nba.com/playerfile/shaquille_oneal/career_stats.html). Tell me how many other centers in the NBA put up those kinds of numbers.

08-09 PHX 75 75 30.0 0.609 0.000 0.595 2.5 5.9 8.4 1.7 0.6 1.4 2.24 3.40 17.8

I'll take a washed up 60% fg shooting 8-1/2 rebound grabbing 18 point a night scoring Shaq anytime.

He's in for 18 years... that's way more than the average NBA player spends in the league... Quit while you're ahead

I see, that's a good point.  Do you will think it will be enough for the Cavs to win the NBA Championship?

LOL Pro Sports are mostly about money if you don't think so you really don't know. Have you ever seen a player take a lesser deal because he love the team sometimes it does but its about the pay day Favre was Given 25 million dollar who in the hell would pass that up and shaq will retire after his contract why quit if you still have money left I wouldn't . Yea he may love the sport but I think if your a certain athlete like shaq you can pick when you wanna leave he earned that much no matter what people think

Coach!!! Your perception of sports is AWESOME!!! You see it for what it is and you let the truth come on out!! Even though I believe he can have one more good year with the CAV's. After this year though, I believe he should retire. I WILL ALWAYS HAVE LOVE FOR HIM FOR WHAT HE WAS ABLE TO BRING TO L.A. and I still wear his Laker Jersey!!

I know and I see what you're saying.  I should have worded the question "Based on his Athletic Ability, Should Shaq Retire?"  Cuz we all know "most" players will keep playing as long as they're healthy and getting good money.

My feelings on him go back and forth.  Depending on who he is playing and how he acts.  I think he does use that huge body of his to hurt other players when they go into the paint.  Lets face it,on almost any play he could be called for a foul...they just don't.

I believe he is planning on retiring. While watching the Shaq VS (think that was the name of it) show he had said he was doing the show for cross training cause he wanted to be in the best shape he could to get 1 more ring before he retired. As he talked sounded like this was going to be his last year. He's got plenty of money so probable still around cuz he loves the game.

Why should he retire, if he is good at his game, then let him go on!!! Nothing worse then people telling you what you should and shouldn't do with your life!!! If you're good at something that you enjoy doing or playing then more power to you!!!

Shaquille O'Neal has always on other ventures outside of basketball.  I think that playing in Cleveland with LeBron james will help both players.  O'Neal is still the best center in the league.  In Phoenix, he was with a team that struggled in the half court.

I believe Shaq has to play his sports until such time there are Teams signing him in since we all know he's one of the best Center that NBA got so far and that he can still command a good amount for his services.  As long as other Teams needs his services I think Shaq has to play his sports and we'll see him in this NBA coming season.

I feel SHAQ will do what is best for the team when the time is right. He is a talented man  and would never do anything to hurt his teammates or fans.
#23 | 45 days ago

Love hin or hate him, after 17 yrs, (Shaqfinity) still commands a double team. This just might be the player Lebron needs to get him his first ring. Afterall, who else has  oppossing teams had to focus on ? Mo Williams ?  He hasn't fallen off that much where I see teams posting the Disel up ! 18ppg, 60%fg, 8rpg  Retire ? I don't think so !

Maybe but he still has something in the tank and he one of those players that no matter what should leave when he want to leave no matter what thats my view and as long he still can dunk and block let him play

Shaq didn't really fit into the Suns system but played awesome while he was here. He showed flashes of dominance and even set a personal and nba best for FG%. Definitely shouldn't be playing starter minutes but trust me he's got a couple good years left. Lets just hope he doesn't make any more movies or cds after he retires...

Shaq is just doing what he loves. It isn't about the money, Lord knows he has already made a killin' His pad in FL will tell you that much. Leave him be, he is great and will retire when he feels he is ready!
