Hskrdave Consumer Survey
Tomorrow morning I will be shopping for a new HDTV.  Don't ask what happened to the old one, just know shopping for a new one.  After mourning the 50" Sony Vaio LCD (it lived a good 6 years, i guess, and had been saved under warranty once) I have come to you, the Q, to ask what should Hskrdave be watching  the next game on?  Don't worry about the Size (although I know the bigger the better), I just want to know LCD vs. Plasma, and what brand.  Let's say I'm spending 2k. and feel free to share horror stories.

And thank you Q'ers.

I know Samsung a couple of years ago was pushing out quality, just wanting to know what others are saying.

I think Vizio has the most bang for the buck.

Vizio HDTVVizio is a low-priced flat panel manufacturer that is making some serious waves in the HDTV world. It’s quickly become one of the top selling LCD and plasma HDTV manufacturers in America. With MSRP prices well below most of its competition, many people wonder about Vizio’s quality. But with very favorable reviews from many HDTV websites, Vizio HDTV’s are a very interesting option for the budget-minded HDTV shopper. Check out some Vizio HDTV reviews and find the right one for you.

Spend that money before the libs start taxing "Cadillac" TV's over 25" as part of the new health care package. Their study shows that a TV over 25" encourage too much sitting and not enough exercising.

Just passing on some little-known provisions in the health care reform bill.

Apparently the TV died in it's sleep, because it was fine after  the game, but wouldn't wake up for highlights this morning.

The original one in Raleigh shut down, and then we had a  TigerDirect.com store at the same time.  not sure if Compusa bought Tigerdirect or if under the same corporate umbrella, but tigerdirect was converted to a CompUSA.

What's it like to have $2,000? Does it smell like roses and feel like silk? That's what I imagine in my dreams.

Good luck with your purchase.

I'm responding to Hiawatha, but to all who said the same thing:

I didn't come into $2000 overnight.  And it might not all be spent.  But I budget mostly well, and based on what else is going on, what I have allotted myself for the purchase.

shameless plug:  I am a financial advisor, and I help people with retirement and budgets every day.  if you would like some help, PM me, I do free consultations.

Now some mod will probably edit that out of there.

No need to explain the 2K. My comment was supposed to be a reflection on me, not on you.

Again, enjoy the TV. Maybe you can have me over so I can watch the Irish disappoint in high definition.
#18 | 1819 days ago

I have a really wonderful TV...paid a ton 'o money for it, watch it everyday. Now, do I know the brand? Uh, no.

I would maybe be able to look at the brand if I were at home. Just buy one and get on with your marvelous life!

Well, I have the Vizio too-- 47" 120MHZ  model-- DO get a LCD TV with the 120MHZ refresh rate though.  At first I thought it was a gimmick (120Mhz), but wait until you see any movie or show with the smooth motion effect-- it's unreal!!!!

You don't have to get the Vizio brandname, BUT if you have a Sam's club where you are at-- buy the television there!   Reason being, if you keep the receipt and original packaging (remote, owners manual, etc.) you can return the TV for ANY REASON!!!!   No joke, either-- I knew one of my family members have an issue with an LCD TV that they bought on a Sam's Club credit account for $1300 in Dec. 2006.   They returned it Apr. 2009 (!) because it had a problem with the tuner not changing channels properly.   The manager themselves OK'd the return, AND since that LCD TV wasn't in stock, they gave him the same size TV.....  AND credited his account back over $300 dollars (the difference for the price of the original TV minus the new TV's price!)

Needless to say, I'm buying any electronics from Sam's from now on!

The last time we bought a TV, I asked a few different people (Circuit City for example) what the main difference between LCD and plasma was.  All of them told me the same thing:  if it's a bigger TV, get a LCD.  Smaller TV's (36" and under) go with a plasma.

I'm not good at explaining this, but the LCD works better on large screens because of the crystals (I think).  A plasma looks great on the smaller screens, but when the screen is stretched too much, the picture quality isn't quite as good.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  That's what I got from it when I asked around.

^^ AND that was without purchasing ANY additional warranty!

I did some digging looking into technologies before I bought my TV.   LED TV is the newest technology.  LED TVs are the thinnest, brightest, and don't have any possible pixel issues like LCD TVs.  LCD TVs are better than plasma TVs 'cause they use less electricity, do not fade, and do not get image burn-in.  Plasma was the brightest display (until LED TVs) but had all the previous problems, which is why LCD TVs are more popular with buyers....

After extensive research in the matter we bought a 40" Samsung LCD. The price was great...3 months ago on sale at Sears for about $1200. If I had an infinate amount of money, I would get one of the new LED TV's.

I have a Samsung 47" flat-screen LCD.  It was on sale when Circuit City went out of business for about $1400, so that's well within your price range.  Obviously, it would be a downgrade for YOU, Mr. Hoity Toity 50" Screen!  Whatever.

I like it and haven't had any problems with it.  It even withstood an exploding soda can incident.    (Don't ask.)

Just bought a TV for my father, money well spent.  We shopped at a local business that had them on sale.

We got a 52" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV this July and I  it! I don't remember exactly how much we spent but I think it might have been a few hundred $'s more than 2k. There were less expensive models and sizes though, that were fine.

We checked out the LED's, and I didn't like how the picture looked pixelated a lot of times - it was just weird.
Personally, I hate plasma - but that's just my own preference. LCD is the best.

That's the best way for it to go ... so peaceful.  I had one of my old TVs start smoking while I was watching "Survivor" a few years back.    NOT the best way to go ... no, not at all.  You are a lucky man.

Unpaid commendation: Hskrdave invests my $50 per month very wisely in some fancy fund thing deal  that I dunno much about, but he does, so that's why he's my financial guru.

I don't have any clue as to what tv you should get.  Go to Zaxby's and  eat some chicken for me.  That's the only consumer advice I have for you currently.  oh!!  and shop at Lowe's.
