Would Warriors over Mavs be the greatest NBA playoff upset?

by CriticalFanatic CriticalFanatic 5/1/0712 Comment Comments »
Would Warriors over Mavs be the greatest NBA playoff upset? PhotoBruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle says it most certainly would.

I don't know about you guys, but this is the most exciting playoff series for me since Jordan played. This is why we love March Madness so much. Cinderella owns March, but hardly ever presents itself during the April, May, and June.

Golden State is mesmerizing to watch. They're explosive on offense  with a handful of players who can change momentum on any play. The Bearded-one, J-Rich, Pietrus, and the still underrated Monta Ellis. Not to mention newcomers Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington who aren't lacking in explosive potential. The Warriors also befit their nickname on the defensive end. Relentless. And you can't laud the team without mentioning Don Nelson, one of the best in the game. Ever. You see, this is my problem with calling the Warriors the greatest upset ever. They're too damn good to be an 8-seed. They're far better than that Denver Nuggets team was in 1994.

Jenkins argues:
That was good stuff -- but not as unlikely as what we're seeing right now. Denver's playoff drought had been a mere three seasons, to the Warriors' 12.
That's a good point, but compare the lineups. Compare that Denver trailed 2 games to 0. There were some other upsets before my time that I just can't judge, so Mutombo clutching the basketball above his body remains my biggest shocker.

But there's no question which upset is/could be the most entertaining. (as an aside, this will test the CF curse theory I have)

Reason: This would be the first #8 seed to upset a #1 seed in a best-of-seven series. Also factoring the Mavs had one of the best regular seasons in history also, that makes this upset even better. The upset completes tonight.

I agree with you CF.  This Golden State Roster when HEALTHY is much better than their record and much better than Mutumbo's squad.

Also, that was the FIRST time a #8 seed had beat a #1 so it may qualify as a bigger upset (it was inconceivable).  For example, when a #16 beats a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament, I think it will automatically the biggest upset in the history of the tournament and nothing can ever top it.

Honestly, I think everyone knew this was an extremely likely scenario, therefor not making it the best upset. However, if they were to roll into SA and upset them, I would view it as a bigger upset. But, that's probably my biased talking.

Also, it looks as if I will not be posting after tonight due to the bet between Beast and I. Wish me and the Mavs luck :P

it was likely because Golden State knows how to make the Mavericks look like pathetic losers. and Dallas hasn't done SQUAT on Golden State in years. Now-- GS upsetting the Spurs? Gee-- when they powered up that lineup that the Mavericks are struggling against, the Spurs actually topped them by 13 with them scoring all over us. 112-99 was the final. Spurs are 3-1 versus the Warriors, and guess what the margin of victory was for the 3 games the Spurs won?? 30. Warriors won't upset San Antonio. Just like they are sealing up Iverson and Melo, the same will be done with their run-and-gun crap ass basketball.

Things the Mavericks can do after tonight:

  • Go to the beach and catch some waves.
  • Go fishing with Kenny Smith.
  • Whack some golf balls with Tiger Woods.
  • Watch San Antonio Spurs playoff action.
  • Go to the bar, and hopefully don't pull a Stephen Jackson or a Ron Artest.
  • They can kick excersize bicycles, whine, cry, and complain since they lost.
  • Buy plane tickets to go to Golden State, and pretend there is a game 6.
  • Dirk can cry getting his MVP award since it didn't get him no where.
  • Sleep! Hey-- no late nights, or tough losses that keep you awake at 4 AM.
  • Invest in another MVP since Dirk can't lead a team, for next year.
  • Shoot for 73-9 record next year since 67-15 wasn't enough to beat a #8 seed.

well-- you can't say the whole NBA is bad. The Eastern Conference is bad. the West has so many great teams and players. The Warriors are a magnificent team. They have developed their true form, and have a lot of young talent adn veteran talent in their line-up. The Warriors also have better match-ups on the Mavericks, so it is easier for them to penetrate to the paint, and easy to bomb from the 3 point arc.

The Warriors remind me of a well rounded college team.  They seem to take shots where you sit there and scream what the hell is he doing.  But then in the end it all works out so your calm again.

i can't wait till the West Finals... Warriors better hope Phoenix can beat San Antonio, otherwise its a clear path to the Finals. Fact-- running teams are unsuccessful versus San Antonio's style of play. Denver, Phoenix, and Golden State having run-and-gun, offensive style of play. San Antonio has held Denver 14.1 points below their average... and they will be gone in 5 as i said. Phoenix will be next to suffer... then maybe Golden State. Rememer- Spurs' margin of victory over their 3 wins on Golden State is 30. So Spurs don't only know HOW to beat the Warriors-- but beat the living S$#% out of them.

Whatever year it was when Dikembe Mutombo and Denver beat Seattle in the first round (1997, maybe?).  That was the most shocking playoff upset.

Didn't Denver beat the Sonics in their really good years or something with Mutumbo on the floor hugging the ball. That was a bigger upset especially in a 5 game series.

They won't win it all because they won't be able to handle a team that actually plays defense! They will beat Dallas at home though and I will be the first one to jump up and down with excitement!

I don't know which one, but not this one, because the only reason Golden State slipped down to the 8 seed was injuries, and everyone knew they had a chance.

New York beat the Heat in '98 and Nuggets beat the Sonics in '94.  (I might be a year or 2 off on the years).  Yes, those were 5 game series, but both of those teams proved they were better than expected after the upset series as well (New York advanced to Finals; Nuggets took Jazz to 7).  If Golden State beats Dallas and then proceeds to take the next opponent the distance or advances, then this could possibly be considered a bigger upset.  I say it is too early to call this the biggest upset ever.   (The Nuggets were down 2-0 in the Sonics series and 3-0  in the Jazz series).
In closing, I think this is just a terrible draw for the Mavs.  The Warriors coach knows their players and personel very well and Golden State can run a superior offense, much as Dallas does and has in years past.  Practically to a player, Golden State is improved this year.  If this GS team stays together I don't know that they would be an 8 seed next year.

Well but like I keep saying. These teams that like to run and gun usually have a very, very hard time with teams that play defense. That's most of the reason why I think that even if Dallas does get out of this round (which they won't) then they wouldn't even get to the finals because they are going to have to go through Houston (most likely) and hopefully the Spurs which has the best ranked defense. It's the same story with the Warriors when they win the series. It's too hard to play an uptempo game when you're playing the best defensive team. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS! and we all know this!
