Union take first step toward filling out roster |
New York, NY (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Union, Major League Soccer's newest expansion club slated to join the league for the 2010 season, selecting 10 players from nearly 200 left unprotected in the league's expansion draft on Wednesday afternoon.
Highlighting Union head coach Peter Nowak's selections where Columbus Crew forward Alejandro Moreno and Chivas USA defender Shavar Thomas, both of whom started 17 games for their respective clubs in 2009.
"While we are very disappointed to lose a player of Alejandro's caliber and qualities, it's unfortunately the price of building a championship team with great depth," Crew technical director Brian Bliss said. "He is a great professional and leader who was a very important part of our three major trophies over the last two years and we wish him happiness and continued success in Philadelphia."
"Shavar is a talented, strong defender, and we wish him the best of luck in Philadelphia," Chivas USA Vice President of Soccer Operations Stephen Hamilton said. "The reality of the Expansion Draft is that you may lose a valued member of your team, and we're sorry to see Shavar go. We now turn our focus to putting together our team for the 2010 MLS Regular Season."
Five teams did not have a player selected - FC Dallas, the Houston Dynamo, the Kansas City Wizards, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC - while 10 teams lost a player.
The Union, who will open their inaugural season in April, will aim to equal the feat of Sounders FC this season by making the playoffs in their first year.
