Blogging the Bases: Greg Maddux throws complete game
5/15/07

Covering all the bases from a Monday night in baseball ...

Mad Dog tosses gem SD 7, Cin 1 Maddux likes pitching against the Reds. 23-16, 7 CG, 10 SHO, 3.52 ERA in his career and has won 6 straight against the Redlegs. Greg's not going to pull off this outings too often, but as long as he brings it like this as often as he is I don't see the guy retiring anytime soon. How long do you think Maddux can pitch?

So does Daisuke
Bos 7, Det 1 Red Sox nation expected this sooner, but Dice-K finally has his first complete game. Matsuzaka Watch recaps the important of his second straight dominating performance keyed by limiting walks. That's important for all pitchers, obviously, but appears to be the make or break for a good Dice-K outing.

Even a Nationals pitcher had it going Was 2, Atl 1 Jason Bergmann took a no-hitter into the 8th. Shocking, right? Bergmann might have actually been more surprised than us as he forget he had to bat in the 7th, needing a reminder from the manager about the no DH rule in the NL. What is is about the Braves that bring out the sort-of best in Washington? Nats are 3-3 thus far against one of the league's best teams.

How do the Orioles respond to their 6-run 9th inning disaster on Sunday? Picking fights with one another Tor 5, Bal 3 Jay Payton and Melvin Mora nearly came to blows after a base-running miscommunication to end the game. It doesn't need to be pointed out, but I will anyway, Sam Perlozzo ... you've totally lost your team. Somehow, he's surprised at fans calling for his job.

Lastly, listening to Dusty Baker announce a Cubs game was about as good as it gets. Watching your pitcher (Michael Wuertz) walk three straight including the winning run is as bad as it gets. NYM 5, CHC 4 The effect of Jose Reyes on the bases was evident as Wuertz wet the mound, more concerned about him than throwing a pitch across the plate.

Feel free to add on to anything I likely missed. (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi)
