NBA suspends Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw for Game 5

Awful, awful decision.

Turns out, he is Big Shot Rob, as his cheap shot has taken out two of the most valuable players in the series. For his deed, Horry has been suspended 2 games. One I'm sure he'll happily serve.

If the NBA wants to interpret it's rules in black and white, then Tim Duncan needs to be suspended as well. That's the only conclusion I can come to.

From Pounding the Rock (Spurs Blog of all places) who has summed it up best:
The NBA is retarded.
What are your thoughts on the decision? Can Phoenix still pull of the series?

Terrible. The Spurs got handed the series for a cheap shot. Unbelievable.

The Spurs were not handed the series. The Suns lost contorl. I will admit that was a cheap shot by Horry. But Amare and Boris should have known. I mean come on it happens so much in the NBA. So dont say that Duncan should be different. The situation was so much different. There was no scuffle when Elson dunked it. Duncan was not running off the bench (to go and check in) that was the worst cover up story ever. So no the Spurs did not get haned the series the Suns gave it away.

Thank you David Stern for ruining the series. Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen should also be suspended as well. I thought the rule book should apply for every team.

The rule book doesn't state you have to running off the bench to get suspended. Tim Duncan clearly left the bench and was on the court.

Well that is the series. Suns can't guard Duncan with Amare, no way they can guard him with out him. Spurs take Amare and Diaw-less game at Phoenix and win the series at home.

Pathetic.  Stat and Diaw did not get involved and did not escalate the situation.  For all the Spurs fans who are being so smug and arrogant, I'd love to see how they'd react if this situation happened in reverse.

hey Rookie, that's probably the dumbest statement I've heard on Fan IQ and I've been around for a little while

Don't you think Spurs fans would be saying the same thing that the Suns were handed the series if Duncan was suspended?  It's not a matter of faith, it's reality.  The NBA has put the Suns at a huge disadvantage by suspending the 2 players that can try to guard Duncan.

I hope Phoenix pulls this out with their "B" team to not only shut up obnoxious Spurs fans but David Stern as well.

The reason Duncan didn't get a game was because the rule actually says that if the player is leaving the bench for a skirmish (something like that) then they shall be suspended for 1 game and fined $35,000. On another note, does anyone see this as perhaps becoming a new strategy, send in one of your 8th through 10th guys on the team to commit a hard foul/cheap shot like that near the opponents bench prompting the team that had the player get the shot jump up and come on the court? I know that sounds terrible but you never know. I created a poll for which to discuss that possibly becoming a strategy. http://www.faniq.com/poll_enter.php?poll_id=102278

WTF!?!?!    Seriously... WTF?  I don't get it.

If I hear or read another Spurs fan complain about the NBA always tries to screw them over because they are a small market team, or claim that their teams plays basketball the "right" way I will flip the h*$# out.  This is complete BS and a disgrace to basketball.  This is no better than thuggish hockey.  When the Suns put Tony Parker or Manu on his ass in Game 6 there better be no suspensions either.  I seriously can't believe this.

I don't see why not. Had there been a "skirmish," which is as grey as it gets, on the play that Duncan stood up on the court he would have moved towards the play ... and apparently suspended.

Altogether it's an awful rule when interpreted this way.

Oh yea I totally agree with you. But I read in that god awful Jemele Hill chat someone had quoted her the rule. "During an altercation, all players not participating in the game must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined up to $35,000" That is the rule verbatim. It still isn't clear but you could say that there was an "altercation" between Horry and Nash, sorta. And then when Duncan came on the court there was no "altercation"

I've seen national columnists (ie, not Suns fans) saying that the situation that Duncan reacted to was as much of an "altercation" as what happened at the end of the game.   Did anyone get a technical for fighting?  Did anyone throw a punch?  No, the only ejection was Horry's for the flagrant foul.   The fact that it's even become a subjective judgement as far as what was an altercation and what isn't shows how poorly this rule has been interpreted in this case.  The NBA and David Stern have failed in following both the spirit and the letter of the law in this case.

Someone on another message board I frequent had this to say about the situation:

If I'm the Suns I commission a hit on Duncan with Burke doing the honors.  Make it as blatant as possible.  Stand over him and taunt him.  Heck, I would let Burke whip "it" out and pee on duncan.  If it breaks a leg or ends a career so be it, this is the precedent stern has set: you can gain advantage from dirty play.  Even better if some of the spurs players leave the bench.

From what I understand, Duncan left the bench to check on an injured teammate.  BIG DIFFERENCE from leaving the bench to jump into a confrontation.  I didn't see Duncan's play, but if he was getting up to check on an injured teammate...it's not the same thing.  At all.

However...Nash was pretty hurt on that play though, LOL.  So maybe it IS the same thing.

But I will say this.  Nash needs better insurance.  Dude has been getting MOBBED the whole series.  Headbutt with Tony (purely accidental), the knee from Bowen (still not sure on that one) and this body check from Horry (it was an INTENTIONAL foul).  I respect that he stood up to Horry without being a total dummy about it.  I'm starting to like the little guy.  He's a real baller.

Stoudemire and Diaw left the bench to check on a teammate as well. The "skirmish" started after the two were already out on the court.

So basically this is a 1 game suspension for about 1 step that they each took afterwards.

WTG, NBA. Way to eff up the best series in many, many years.

Let me know if you think he was still checking on an injured teammate. Hadn't thought of it that way, but still not buying.

There is a video on here somewhere of Tim Duncan coming off the bench.  It doesnt appear (at least to me) that he was going to check on an injured teammate, but that was just my take.

Absolutely, there was NO confrontation going on.  Just a teammate down on the ground.  I don't think he was going to fight the Suns or get in their faces.  I think it's totally different.  I don't agree with Diaw and Amare getting suspended but all this "well then duncan needs to be suspended too" makes no sense to me after watching the tape.  People just want to cry about something.  There is a reason Stu watches the tapes and reviews the plays.

If I write what I want to write, it won't just get me edited, it will get me kicked off the site.

Spurs fans, enjoy this gift. If the Spurs take the series, it will be a tainted victory. Your cheap shot goon got 2 Suns suspended. Merry F-ing Christmas. Now we won't get to see how this series would have played out at even strength, which is really a shame.

To David Stern & Stu Jackson: If anything happens at that game tomorrow, you will have brought this upon yourselves.  The penalty for a lesser player provoking an incident is nowhere close to the potential reward. Your league is a freaking joke. And now you don't have the balls to show up in Phoenix after this decision. If you really stand by it, then you'd have no problem attending the game.

We have known for years that Stern has no balls, the fact that he is no longer attending game 5 after this pitiful decision only further proves that point.

I think the suspensions are fair. Some people may think that Amare and Diaw shouldn't have been suspended but in this case it clearly states in the rules that if any player leaves the bench and altercation accurs they get handed a one game suspension. So you have no choice but to suspended Amare and Diaw. Suns fans should be happy Raja Bell didn't get suspended as well. Phoenix still has a shot an winning this they just need to keep there composure.

I said he should have been. I'm not the refs. I can't explain why they didn't suspend him. All I'm saying about this is you can't alter the rules due to circumstances. The rules are rules for a reason. I do think they should change the wording of the rule, but for right now you have to follow it.

Yeah, the rules are rules - just like that rule about "no complaining about calls", or even travelling.

The NBA sure does enforce rules consistently, don't they?

I think the suspensions for Diaw and Amare are ridiculously stupid, but that's just the nature of the NBA. I agree with Horry's suspension 100%, and am shocked he lost his cool in such a pivotal point in the game. IMO the game was not over (00:00 on the clock) even though the Suns were up and had the ball, but when Horry did what he did it was officially over. I feel cheated by Robert Horry, and by David Stern who said in his interview on PTI that he made the final decision too suspend the Suns players in question.
I'm watching Stern on PTI right now and he's coming across as a smug piece of crap. Listen to him saying "Thou shalt not!" He clearly thinks he is God.

Here is what I would do to change the rule: allow for review to see if a person got involved with anyone in the fight. If they did, even if they just got in someone's face, automatic 5 or 10 game suspension. If they didn't do anything (like in this case), then no suspension. That would keep guys from getting in trouble just for exhibiting their natural reaction when a teammate gets thrown into the scorer's table like that, and it would be a harsh enough penalty to keep anyone from getting involved in the altercation.

I was just throwing a number out there. I think the number would have to be enough that if you did get involved with anything when you came off the bench, you'd be severely punished. That's how the league should scare people. If someone leaves the bench and then gets involved, that's not a gut reaction. Jumping up when you see something happen to a teammate is perfectly natural - if you stop or get held back before you get close to doing anything, no harm has been done.
