Robert Horry body checks Steve Nash Video. Who will be suspended for Game 5?
by CriticalFanatic

Big Shot Bob turning into a Cheap Shot Boob could turn out to help San Antonio.

Before we get into the mess, how great was the last 5 minutes of the game? It was just enough to make up for what was an otherwise maddening game in this series. I'm convinced Spurs fans would think the game was well officiated if the Suns had 30 fouls to their 2. And channeling Bill Simmons a bit here, have you ever two teams' players spend more time whining about calls? IF you're bored for Game 5 (unlikely) try comparing the amount of shots taken to the amount of time the whiny faces comes out. The latter will win. Promise.

Now to the unfortunate mess that Stu Jackson has before him this morning. As you can see from the video Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemire momentarily leave the bench, not fully onto the floor and into the play, but enough that by the letter of the law they appear to have broken a dumb NBA rule. Sadly, I side with Barkley here. You have to acknowledge a player's immediate reaction is going to defend their teammates. So long as they didn't jump into the fracas and returned to the bench I don't see the issue. It's a technicality and why let that ruin an entire hard fought series? Even this intelligent Spurs fan wants Amare to play. (Pounding the Rock)

Horry is out. That's a given. His cheap shot started this mess, and was completely uncalled for. And please spare me the Nash flopped after hitting the wall. Doesn't matter. As for Bell, Diaw and Stoudemire. I wouldn't suspend them a game, but I suspect Stern won't see it that way as he's never treated a rule with grey area.

Who do you think should be suspended?

Few more thoughts from the Game:
1) Did Shaq bring anything to the studio last night? I swear he only said 10 words.
2) The officiating is atrocious (on both sides, Spurs fans). They're to blame for this series getting out of control. However, the problem they are having is an embarrassingly high amount of flops. So on one side, I support them letting everyone play, but the lack of consistency has forced each team to see what more they can get away with.
3) Anyone else find it amusing Spurs fan are so sure Amare should be suspended, but not so much on Diaw. Watch the footage again. Diaw makes it just as far off the bench (and doesn't have the poor I was checking in excuse). So why is it Amare is more guilty? Oh, right.
4) How poor is the 'I was checking in excuse." Creative, but poor.
5) Nash's interview postgame confirms his place atop my 'coolest athletes in sports' list.

It was a simple hard foul he was going to get fouled anyway. Horry shouldn't have as Nash Put it " Body Checked Him" but Nash shouldn't have tripped Bowen earlier in the game. Bowen didn't go after nash but Nash took it upon himself to act like a 2 year old and run after Horry. Nash should have took the hit like a man and I don't perosonally think that the hit was hard enough to send Nash flying I think there was some acting involved. I don't think Horry should be suspended and I don't think Nash should be suspended. But Raja Bell Should be suspended for shoving Horry and Amare should be suspended for getting up off the bench.

The spirit of the rule is to aviod players coming off the bench and having them get involved in a fight.  Well, didn't the rule serve its purpose last night?  Amare and Diaw initially reacted and came off the bench, but then quickly sat right back down without doing anything.  The rule did its job, there is no need to suspend any of them.  A suspension would just be rewarding the Spurs for being in the wrong.

So let me get this straight:

The one player who cause the situation is the least to blame? I don't understand you're reasoning here. Bell should be suspended for shoving Horry, but Horry should be penalized for a flagrant cheap shot on Nash. It wasn't a simple hard foul. It was a forearm shiver. Even Horry knows it was cheap.

I'm guessing you missed Bowen's elbow to Nash before he flopped to the floor? Either way it has nothing to do with the Horry foul.

Horry fouled Nash he got a T and he was ejected that is the only thing that should happen to Horry. If your not going to Suspend Bowen for kicking Amare during a dunk and trying to hurt him then how can you suspend Horry? Horry Fouled nash and the refs handled it Nash and Bell and Amare had not right to got after Horry. Bell had no right to get involved and in my mind there is a big difference between shoving somebody and fouling somebody I think Nash acted a little bit. Yes I did miss the elbow but your wrong it has everything to do with it because nobody is talking about Nash tripping Bowen even though he was wrong everybody is making Horry look like the bad guy.

Rules are in place for spirits sake. A rule is a rule and when you start trying to separate players who disobey the rule as it stands you lose control over the whole situation. If the rule states that you are not allowed to leave the bech then you are not allowed to leave the bench. Whether you throw a punch, yell, or pick up a piece of paper off the floor. You can't leave the bench period. Suspensions are due and if not given the league is going to have a hard time enforcing that same rule in the future. You'll have every single person pointing to this incident as their argument for not being suspended.

Here is the big question: was it actually a fight?

No punches were thrown. Raja & Horry did get involved, but can you really call that a fight? Guys get in each other's faces all the time. It's all going to depend on how the NBA defines that. If they rule that it was not a fight, then Amare & Boris should be fine.

If it had been Tim Duncan that got off the bench and didn't do anything, I wouldn't be looking for him to get suspended. The people gunning for Amare & Diaw to get suspended are Spurs fans who are now very afraid that their team can't win this series otherwise.

I swear I posted that before I read this - TrueHoop just made the same argument about it not being a fight. He even brings up the point that if it had been a fight, Raja would have been ejected for a fighting foul.

No fight, no suspensions - lets bring on game 5.

I wouldn't suspend either Diaw or Stoudamire, and not just because it would reward a cheap shot (which frankly should be reason enough to not suspend either of them. F that, you're telling me if some future Bruce Bowen wannabe takes it to the next level and stabs somebody on court, you're going to punish the other team for mobbing him?), but because of the added factor of having the leader of your team injured right in front of the team bench.

I couldn't tell about Stoudamire, but it definately looked like Diaw was going to check on Nash first, clobber Horry second.
