MLB does that too.... But not in a simplistic way. Their merchandise thing is complicated. Internet sales are evenly split... Sales at games are split between teams (if the item is connected to the teams playing), sales at stores have a percentage going to the team who is on the item with the rest split.... Or something like that. I read it once years ago and I'm sure some particulars of changed. But it was overly complex I remember.MLB does that too.... But not in a simplistic way. That is a good call and probably ought to be an option. But in my humble opinion, the AL Central is traditionally one of the more mediocre divisions in the majors. And I think that hurts him in evaluations.

There is just not enough room on ESPN or ESPN2 for the NBA, NHL and MLB. There just isn't. If such a thing came about, the NHL would likely get relegated to ESPNNews. Like the USA World Cup qualifiers got when they got preempted by something ESPN deemed more popular. The NHL cable deal HAS to be in a place that will not relegate them to lower level tiers if something else gets in the way. The NHL cable deal has to place the NHL no lower than the #2 event or it just won't work. Which is why ESPN is simply not a good option for them right now. I agree that perhaps VS is not the best option. But not only is it currently a better option than ESPN, it seems to be their only one. I'd like them to be on USA or something like it myself. But they don't seem to be interested. I'll have to take your word on how much air time ESPN gives to discussing the NHL. I gave up on ESPN years and years ago. I hear more ESPN radio than I ever see on their TV stations. Although it seems a bit irresponsible for them to ignore the NHL. There is just not enough room on ESPN or ESPN2 for the NBA, NHL and MLB. I don't think being relegated to being the #5 or 6 or even 7 sport on ESPN is better than being #1 on Vs. Answer this next question honestly... What do you honestly think ESPN would do with the NHL when both the NHL and NBA are in playoff mode? And remember, they will want to still show baseball games some nights too. Exposure has potential to help, but the exposure has to be positive exposure as well. If it isn't, then all the exposure in the world won't do any good. It will only turn whatever newbies may tune in off. And I think you know where I am going when I say "positive" exposure. Good grief. I still don't know why you feel things would be different now than it was before. When the NHL was on ESPN, they spoke of it on Sportscenter and gave it plenty of time. It didn't help. They were still getting better ratings for poker than hockey. And that was before they got the NBA. If the NHL was on ESPN, they would STILL not be given the time of day. If any games were shown, they would be on ESPNNEws or U or some other lower tier station no one gets. I have Direct TV (So no VS for me right now) and I STILL know they are better of on VS right now than on ESPN. What the NHL needs in terms of TV is not a better cable deal. But a better over-the-air network deal. They need at the very least ALL the Finals games on a major network. They need at the very least playoff coverage EVERY weekend. And they need national (Not regional) games on every week at least after the Winter Classic. But we are talking catch-22 here. No network will commit to that unless the ratings get better and the ratings will not get better until some network makes the commitiment. ESPN has little to do with it. The MLBPA needs to give some power back. I'm kind of with you in that if I'm in the PA, I wouldn't give anything back unless there was a REAL Commissioner once again. One who did not only answer to the owners, but one who took everyone's best interest to heart. By everyone, I mean the players, owners, the game and fans. But I'm not so high that I think that will ever happen. PS... MLB shares all national cable and network contracts, just like the NFL does. The big difference is in the NFL there are no local TV deals. The NFL has no revenue sharing because there are no local deals for individual teams to share.The MLBPA needs to give some power back. There might be a surprise in MLB as well. Like the '08 Rays. But those teams don't last. The system makes it VERY hard for them to do so. Plus, the main difference is the NFL has no local TV money going to individual teams. It's all netowrk. The Marlins don't spend that much because they DON'T make it. Sure, the owner could pump his own money in. I think a $201 million payroll is ridiculous when the next highest clocks in at $149 million and the median is at $80 million. That gap is just too great. If everyone could pay $201 million, then it wouldn't be an issue. The problem is the only figure that anyone not on the inside can see are attendance figures. And those can be explained by the quality of the team people are watching. Good team: Good attendance. Bad team: Bad attendance. That's not exactly rocket science. Revenue figures are pure guesswork. Also, consider this... Minor League hockey has tried and failed a few times in the Bay Area. Yet the Sharks do great. The Sharks even drew well when they sucked. There is no tried and true formula. Thus far, there is no good reason for the NHL to abandon the Arizona market. None. If the minors do well in those "non sexy" markets, then there is no reason why the Majors wouldn't. There are quite a few people who care in those areas. It's a stereotype. Attendance has nothing to do with assembling a good team. So the analogy still works. The Expos are not a good point. They were hijacked. MLB doomed the team to failure when they took over ownership. They never should have allowed the owner to buy another team unless he had a taker for the team he was dumping. There are many cases where teams do lousy at the gate when they suck and draw well at other times. The Expos did draw well for 20 years. It wasn't until fans realized the economic system in place doomed the team to perennially being in the cellar with only the occasional exit. That happens in nearly every MLB market. The Indians couldn't draw anyone when they sucked. Same with the A's and Braves and Tigers. This list goes on. It was MLB's decision to play Expos home games in Puerto Rico. Further cementing their failure. MLB WANTED the Expos to fail and did everything in their power to make it happen. It was almost like they realized opting for Florida in the '93 expansion was a mistake and tried to make it up by finding a way to get a team in DC. The choice they should have made instead of S Florida. What the Expos needed was solid ownership who was willing to make a commitment to make it work in Montreal. Sadly, the MLB economic system made that difficult. But not impossible. Hence, there weren't many people willing to buy the Expos. Hell, it took Disney years and years to unload the Angels. I don't know about the Coyotes never seeing a Finals. People thought the Red Sox would never win a World Series either. The team is playing OK right now, but one month of not sucking is hardly a good measuring stick. Like I said, make your assessment when the team turns into contenders. In terms of attendance, I think the Whale was better off in Hartford. I have no idea how the Canes are doing economically overall. Maybe they have good sponsors or something they never would have had in Hartford. But there are no rumors of them moving. So one has to think they are economically doing at least OK. For the record... I'll say it again. I HATE the idea of teams moving. That said, there is currently one team who I think can make a case for leaving town. The Panthers. The S Florida market is not a good sports market. Unless you play your events on a gridiron, the area just isn't interested. And besides, I don't think the NHL needs S. Florida to help with their national presence. And I think another western outpost would help. Perhaps Portland, OR.I don't know about the Coyotes never seeing a Finals. Well, actually I think the Whale moving to Carolina was far more unforgivable than the Jets move. That story was just plain evil on the part of the teams owner. Not sure why you think Carolina is more deserving than Tampa. They both have won Cups. And both have had attendance issues when the team stunk. Both are quite similar. I promise you, get the Coyotes in the Stanly Cup Finals and you will see the fans come out for them.
