I don't. But at least my conclusion is based on the team's actions. And also taking into consideration the state of the game when the books were made public 19 years ago, knowing things have improved some since. This list of evidence is quite long. Do you really need to read it all? I'm kind of wondering why someone thinks teams can all spend $100 million at least. I'm a very cynical person in general. But even I can't buy that more than 2/3 of the owners have no interest in winning. I grant you, there could very well be one or two. But 15-20? Unreasonable. Your theory sounds nice. And yet when put into practice it just doesn't work out that way. The Marlins made stupid decisions? They did exactly what you think all teams should do! They threw money at players! And, thanks to Bud Selig, they won a world series. They followed your playbook. And never recovered their so-called investment. The Marlins have no choice but to invest what little money they make in their farm system. And they have a decent one. They have cranked out some quality players. Too bad they can only keep what they grew for 4 or 5 years. They can't afford to pay them any longer than that. BTW... It is mainly because of geography that they can't build their franchise up like the Yankees. The corporate sponsors and other economic opportunities just aren't in the S Florida area like they are in New York. See what I mean when I say geography plays a huge part? It's not just population. Have you not read anything I wrote? A fan base is nice and good, but what you need is TV money. Companies willing to buy ads and luxury boxes. And if you fan base is large or affluent enough, you can charge more for tickets than anywhere else. But does this necessarily have anything to do with their success as a team? If success is measured by how much money is coming in.... YES!!!!!!!! You really have to ask that? then why haven't the Yankees won every championship in its history? Arrrgggghh!!!!! Why oh why do ignorant Yankee fans KEEP bringing this up? No, I am not looking at the black and white of things. At all. Just reading my posts make that obvious. There were eras where they practically did win all the time. And in the modern era, the odds are longer. But... With the money advantage, the Yankees can be in a position to win every year. With the huge playoff field of today, the post season becomes a dice roll, but if you keep showing up at the table, eventually the dice will roll your way. That is what the money brings them. The best chance to win on a consistent basis. Talk about making something a black and white issue.... Why have they had years go by where their team was performing poorly? Because even with the odds in your favor, you will not win all the time. Why have other teams in smaller markets had their own miniature "dynasties", When the Braves were on their 14 out of 15 run, most of those years their owner was using money from his other business interests to keep his payroll high. This is a luxury not even the Yankees have. But they make so much money they don't need it. But most owners can't afford this. So the Turner Braves thing was an anomaly. Before that, you really only had the A's run in the '70's. But they only did that because they had a lot of players come up at the same time, and when the time came, Finley had to get rid of them because he didn't want to pay what they could get from the Yankees and Angels of the world. Supply a good team with good players that people enjoy watching (and, more importantly, watching them WIN) and the demand for your service/product (in this case, tickets to the games, merchandise, copyrights for broadcasts, etc.) will rise, bringing you more revenue. You see, you can do that and most teams simply cannot make what they could make in New York City. Geography will limit what they can do. There are limitations. If the maximum potential of success is limited, then if you do everything right, that limit is the best you can do. Even if the Royals did EVERYTHING they could right and got every break in the world... Bring up a solid core... Win the central 5 years in a row and the World Series 3 of them... They would STILL not make what the Yankees make finishing 5th. Which would lead to the team eventually being forced to sell off most, or all of those good players and start again. Thus alienating the fans again. The Yankees, they don't need to start again. They can keep those players around for years and years. Making their fans happy. (at least the ones who don't get gouged by their absurd ticket prices) It is an absolute concept you don't seem to be able to grasp.Your theory sounds nice. It's mostly geography. I generally don't deal in absolutes. I understand the Yankees have a larger market than some other teams "SOME"???? How about ALL!! When the White Sox won their World Series, their payroll was indeed top 8. No, the Angels are not top 5. But they have been. And this year they are VERY close to #5. Besides... There are 8 playoff teams. And it is indeed sad when one can predict what teams will go without ever seeing who is on the roster. All one needs is to look at payrolls and you would be right far more often than you would be wrong. but you still have yet to make a reasonable argument why the Yankees are so better off due to THEIR geography Of course I have. It is right there in black and white. They play in New York City! The media capital of North America. The money from corporate sponsors, advertising and other financial prospects are there. Some things can be done elsewhere but even if they worked (and they don't in most markets) they would not bring in the kind of revenues the Yankees enjoy. I mean, good grief. This is self evident. I shouldn't even need to spell this out! You spend money to make money in normal business. But sports don't work that way. Supply and demand work differently. Teams that are good can charge super high rates for ads and tickets and such. And people will pay it. Teams that suck can offer games for free and still wouldn't get many people there. And lest you forget the recent examples of teams who spent beyond their means. One of them had to go to MLB with his hat in his hand to get Selig to co-sign a loan to cover his overspending behind. And both are now out of the baseball business. Why don't the Yankee people ever see this? Those blinders are deadly. And your idea that winning a title will breed more money for the team is hogwash. But that is a very limited view of the situation. You are not seeing the bigger picture here. I understand where you are coming from. And no one would be stopping owners from investing money in the team if a cap and sharing were implemented. They can still increase their facilities. Devote money to scouting. Spend money on the minors. Make stadium improvements. All things that increase the value of the team. What the cap does is make it so there is a semblance of competition on the field. People want to see competition. That is why heavyweights don't fight flyweights. No one wants to see that. The game on the whole will thrive and improve if there is a true competition taking place. I don't follow the NFL that closely. But the cap sure seems to work there. The 49'ers have been good and they have sucked. Same with all those teams you mentioned. Not only that, but for fans of many of teams that suck, they have hope that things can change for them. This is not the case for the Royals and Nationals fans. But even Lion fans have hope. Thanks to the cap. Plus, the NFL seems to be thriving under the cap as well. A far cry from where MLB is economically and from the popularity standpoint. Besides... You SAY this about why you don't like the cap. But it just doesn't ring true. I find it very telling that I have yet to find one Yankee fan who supports the cap. And I think there is an obvious reason for this. They enjoy the advantage their team has and don't want to lose it. Deny it all you like. Yes, they play under the same rules. But you are convienantly forgetting they do NOT have the same resources. The luxury tax is worthless. It hasn't deterred the Yankees from overspending and has never been near enough to help the low revenue teams keep any good players they may bring up. At best it has made teams who were losing money left and right to breaking even. What you predict I do not see happening. If the Yankees have cap room for a $1 million salary and the Nationals have cap room for a $10 million salary, I don't see the player taking the $1 million just to play on the Yankees. Players are greedy. They want the money. Again, this falls into the category of, if that happens, then hats off to you for predicting it. And again, your Yankees still come out ahead. So again, you ought to be supporting the cap. Like I said... Put your money where your mouth is. Support the cap and sharing plan. The Yankees had a great team this year because they spent $201 million for it! $49 million more than their closest salaried team. And $120 million more than the Major League mean. I don't know for sure. Although my hypothesis is pretty darn strong and has a lot of support. But I'd like to find out for sure. Let's implement a cap and sharing and see if they still keep on winning. If they do on a consistent basis, you get the satisfaction that all who felt otherwise were wrong. And I will be the first to admit it. If you were so certain the Yankees would still win under those restrictions, then you should be the first in line to support the cap and sharing! No, it doesn't matter that they didn't win the World Series all those years. Their money put them in a position to win all those years. Once in the post season, all bets are off. The money doesn't help them much then. The current post season is very much a dice roll. Something you Yankee kool-ade drinkers like to forget. Remember, the Yankees didn't start spending big money until the mid '20's. So the years before that can be thrown out. Also, you are running back to a standard (and ignorant) argument. Spending the money does not guarantee winning every year. It merely increases the odds of being in a position to win every year. It is certainly possible to spend tons of money and lose. I used the marathon analogy before and it still works. Even with a 14 mile head start does not guarantee a win in the race. One can trip and fall. One could not be prepared. But I gotta tell you.... Starting 14 miles ahead of the pack sure does increase your chances. The ignorance of Yankee fans just astounds me.I don't know for sure. No, not at all. I don't use the terms "big market" or "small market". I use the terms "high revenue" or "low revenue". Plus, the Giants and A's share the same market. So teams in smaller markets than the Bay Area would be that much better off because they don't have to share the market. Funny how you ignore the fact that the Bay Area is the smallest two team market. However, one team is a moderate revenue team and the other is a low revenue team. Which seems about right. Also, the Giants aren't consistently among the top payrolls year in and year out. When they were in contention every year for a short while earlier, they were a top 10 payroll team. (Never top 5, though) They were #13 this year up from #16 last year. But the funny thing is, you have yet to give one reason to suggest that if the Yankees couldn't spend twice as much as everyone else they would still dominate on the field.No, not at all. You really want to go there? Do you really think you are making valid points? It is so very easy here. I don't know what Abreu's contract status was but no matter what it was it doesn't help your point. If he were still under contract, the Yankees letting him go meant they had to eat his remaining contract. Not many teams can afford to do that. The Yankees can. If he was not under contract, they had other options and didn't need him. Swisher. A good deal. The White Sox dumped a salary and the Yankees gave up three players who were never going to help them. Swisher makes $5.3 million this year. Yes, chump change for the mighty Yankees. However, later it starts to get spendy. He will be owed $6.75 million in '10 and $9 million in '11. Still not much for them. But now it gets to the point where most teams would balk at the deal. And why most did. The Yankees have a $10.25 million buy out if they choose to use it this year. So, even if Swisher was a complete bust, the Yankees would have been out $16.75 million. This is WAY more than most teams can afford (Especially for a guy who is not even a middle part of the line up guy) so they back off. The Yankees, with all their money, CAN. Yes, they have Cabrerra. Many teams bring up their own guys who end up being good. The difference is that when it comes time for arbitration or free agency, they have to trade them or let them go. The Yankees can afford to pay them big coin to stay. Pettitte: Nobody wanted to give much to a 37 year old pitcher who was only getting worse. Pettite came back to New York forone reason. The Yankees offered the most money. The Yankees have money but they are not entirely dim. They weren't about to give Pettitte another $15 million based on what he was doing. Plus, their weakness was on the mound and they did need him to round out their staff. Most teams will not pay that much for a 37 year old #4 starter. Pettitte doesn't prove your point.
