I can agree with this...Dale Jr. is currently not a "great driver" compared to others at his level. Maybe that will change, maybe it won't. But that isn't what always determines a fan. Do the Detroit Lions have no fans? You commented earlier, in reference to Dale Jr., "...there's no discernible reason why anyone would root for him..." I disagree with that. I gave reasons that I am a fan, even though he is having a less than stellar season. Also, although I don't think Pat's comment about using or not using proper grammar, capitilzation, and punctuation was directed towards me, I am guilty of it. I'm often in a hurry and/or I just don't pay attention to it. I don't throw out a lot of big words and I tend to put a silly twist on things sometimes just to bring a little levity to situations. As a matter of fact, I usually don't say much at all. I think I have commented more in this thread than I have on anything on the Q. I'm actually very well educated. (crazy...silly...college graduate...halfway through my Master's program...church professional) I know...weird for a freaky NASCAR fan. I just wanted to put that out there. I respect that people do not like NASCAR, and will not ever like it, don't like Dale Jr., and like to make fun of NASCAR and NASCAR fans in general. ...i answered this in a previous post...see above. and actually...i'd like to see examples of when he has been a whiner and/or a drama queen... i just don't see that... ...and I understand THAT point completely... I just think it is wrong to stereotype all NASCAR fans and all Dale Jr. fans. I do not feel that I am incorrigible, nor do I root for Junior out of pity for his father.

Why I'm a Dale Jr. fan... I started following and became a fan of Dale Jr. when he was racing in the Nationwide series (The Busch Series back then). He was very successful, winning two championships. He has also had success in the Cup series, although not recent and he does not have a championship. I was not a fan of Dale Sr. He was my favorite driver to "hate" back in the day. There definitely are some fans of Junior that are so because of his dad, but that is certainly not the only reason. If my favorite football or baseball team has a crappy season or 2, do I write them off...declare myself no longer a fan? If so, I guess I've been doing it wrong. (I never stopped being a Vikings fan. ) ...and besides... he me... Why I'm a Dale Jr. fan... ...my opinion.... ...i think its a big deal...a 4th Championship. There are a lot of NASCAR fans that are tired of the "Jimmie Johnson" show. Jimmie Johnson isn't their favorite driver. I don't think that many people like seeing a team that's not their favorite win the championship over and over in any sport. Maybe it is because I have lots of friends who are NASCAR fans that I still think there is excitement about it. (excitement for or against ) As far as number of races won being more important than the number of season championships...I disagree. I think people will remember how many championships a driver has before they remember how many races they've won. Maybe winning is more important for the guy who doesn't have a shot at the championship right now...but I think the ultimate goal is to be number one. I am a Dale Jr. fan, and I do not know the statistics of what percentage of NASCAR fans are. I don't hate Jimmie or Jeffie... (just don't let that get back to Jr. Nation ) I think there are some drivers that gave a bit of a challenge to Jimmie this year...(Mark Martin for one) and if what happened in Texas happened again....I guess this years championship wouldn't have been decided with 2-3 races to go. There is still a chance...albeit very small...that something crazy could happen. Go Jr.! 88 in '10!! ...my opinion.... ...i think its a big deal...a 4th Championship.
