Dearie I have never doubted Sachin's calibre. In fact I believe anyone who does is a moron. Look about this community and you will find my views on Sachin. In fact, on this poll itself I very clearly mentioned that as per my belief Sachin is among the greatest ever. But 'greatest cricketer ever' is a matter of perception. I just responded to your earlier claim about Bradman's statement. By the way the article you mention actually reflects my view very closely. It very clearly suggests the difficulties in comparing players of different era. But it does have a slight 'misinformation' - that Bradman failed in the Bodyline series. Bradman averaged 60 in the Bodyline series - any batsman of any era would take that average and be happy - but it was low by Bradman's own standards. Actually what we need to understand is that while Bradman did not have to endure the tremendous pressure and constant media scrutiny like Tendulkar, Tendulkar did ot have to bat without protective gear on uncovered pitches. So how can you compare them? The reason Bradman is acknowledged by almost the entire cricket fraternity to be the best batsman ever is that not before him or since has consistency like him been seen. Still, I repeat, Tendulkar is one of the greatest batsmen to grace the game, probably the greatest batsman the game has seen in the last 40 years.Dearie I have never doubted Sachin's calibre. What IPL has done is to make a Swapnil Asnodkar claim on live TV that he is a star. Notwithstanding the fact that he has nothing to show in First Class Cricket. I do not say Swapnil does not have talent. But since he believes he is already a star do you think he has any reason to actually put in the hundreds of hours of sweat and blood on the nets and in the domestic circuit to break into the Test squad? Why should he since he already seems to have achieved his dream? Tiger Pataudi, who is himself part of the IPL technical committee has said in an interview (Devil's Advocate with Karan Thapar) that the youngsters today are recieving too much adulation with too little performance in the IPL. In the process they are losing focus and we are losing prospective players for the National Team. IPL is really the BCCI's cash cow - make as much money as possible while you can earn it seems to be the message. What effect is it going to have on the game in the long run? Now that sportsperson from other discipline are also coming out in the open (Rafael Nadal for one, Cristiano Ronaldo for second) against the 'whereabouts clause' the stand BCCI and the Indian Cricket players had taken has been justified. When the controversy broke first I had heard a lot of critics, including IOC President Suresh Kalmadi (yeah, the same gentleman who has disgraced the country and himself on the Asian Games preparation row) and the sports minister (ex-policeman, so his love for constant vigilantism is natural) launch scathing diatribes against the Cricket establishment. The basic argument was that no other sportsperson from any other discipline across the world had raised any objection. Surprisingly when the honourable Minister and his party colleague should be issuing full retractions of their statements (given that it appears a lot of atheletes in a lot of disciplines hate that particular clause) I only hear deafening silence over the issue. Just for the record, the legend who holds the record for playing for the longest period of time, and upto the oldest age is English All-rounder Wilfred Rhodes who played International Cricket for over 31 years and upto the age of over 52. There's something about these special Cricketers, the likes of Rhodes, Tendulkar and Bradman, that gives them greater longeivity than the ordinary Cricketers. Bradman retired at 40, Hobbs at 48, Sutcliffe at 42, Hammond at 44. Weekes retired at a comaparatively early age of 33. And all of them could play every shot in the book perfectly till the last day of their career. That is why they are among the all time greats (some would dispute Sutcliffe's inclusion, though). And that is why Sachin Tendulkar is among them. He is an all time great. Who is the greatest among them is a discussion which may lead nowhere. Confessing to a crime does not make anyone innocent. What Andre Agassi, one of my idols really, has done is unfortunate. The fact that he chose to disclose this only after the maximum time upto which action could be taken as per ATP rules is also sad. But as far as the question of returning the titles goes, what really needs to be looked into is what titles did he win at the time he was using banned substances. Returning titles he won when he was actually 'clean' will serve nothing. Still, it is unfortunate that he gets away with lying and misleading the authorities.Confessing to a crime does not make anyone innocent. Dear princess, you are rather going the way a certain Uncle R who used to be a regular on this topic once upon a time. Anyway, I believe you made the exact same comments a month or so back and was refuted by statistics. So rather than going that way I will take a new approach. Here's what the captain of the team M.S.Dhoni had to say about Sachin: "Critics needlessly go on talking about Sachin Tendulkar's retirement but the manner in which he keeps going about his business, I often joke that I might well retire before him! That's how good he is even after two decades... His quality knocks in the two finals against Australia (117 Not Out and 91) helped us win our only tri-series title in Australia (2008)... Again his his hundred in the final of the Compaq cup against Sri Lanka in September this year was a quality innings. And he sliced a piece of history for India, scoring a brilliant 103 Not Out in Chennai (against England in December 2008) as he guided us to the fourth highest run chase in Test history (387). Except Bradman, the greatest batsman of all times, and Sir Gary Sobers, the greatest all-rounder of all times all other positions are too close to each other to actually say Sachin is better than them or they are better than Sachin. What is sure is that Sachin Tendulkar, as well as Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe, Everton Weekes and Wally Hammond are all among the all time greats in Cricket history.
