DRESSAGE: Alexandra Korelova (RUS) on BALAGUR - Aachen, Germany 2009

This is a horse that caught my eye at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Have been tracking this duo's career since. The horse (Balagur) is a 19 year old (19!!) Russia Orlov Trotter stallion - a relatively unheard of breed among the predominant European warmbloods that dominate the sport. And what an eye-catching stallion he is too - not only eye-catching, but an amazing performer; the only horse to score a perfect pair of 10's for the PIAFFE at the WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES in Aachen, Germany (2009)

This was the horse that woke up the crowd at the WEG in Aachen, Germany.

The grey 19 year old Russian (Orlov Trotter) stallion grabs your attention immediately with his unusual looks, and his amazing piaffe. This horse is a piaffe machine!! In a movement which most horses struggle with, Balagur looks like he would happily dance the piaffe all day long.
Alexandra Korelova and Balagur won 3rd place for their efforts that day (their score was all over the card, ranging from 5's for the walk, to perfect 10's for the piaffe movement) but I really think they deserve much greater respect and placings than what they've been getting lately.  I don't think the judges know quite what to make of this horse - so unusual is Balagur against the predomiant German warmbloods that dominate the sport, that the judges have become biased and complacent in their preference for the Hano's and the Oldenburg's, KPWN Dutch warmbloods, etc..  A shame really, as this horse is quite as capable.

However, the crowd were very happy to see this pair awarded third place with 72.043% score, and Alexandra earned €3000 for her efforts.

Balagur is a crowd favourite who has had a couple of significant career changes on the way through to his well earned respect for his piaffe.  He has had a long and checkered past - Balagur started out as a circus horse, then found his way as a police horse, then as a parade horse before being discovered by one of Russia’s greatest dressage riders, the late Elena Petushkova, whose knowledgeable eye detected his great potential for piaffe and passage - and now, Balagur is a top international GP star!!
