These great videos just squeeze my heart!  They loved the game so much, they would do anything to play!  What an awesome pitcher!  Today they are out of the game and on the DL for weeks for a lil owie.  These guys would have played whether they got paid or not, a TRUE love of the game!   Thanks so much for sharing Jim!  These are super!  I can't imagine any of them today playing in the pain he endured.  Thanks for sharing!!

He pitched No Hitters while in excruciating pain! These players today fall apart too easy.

A few interesting KO-FACTS:
He debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 24, 1955.
His last appearance was with the LA Dodgers on October 2, 1966. He was w/the Dodgers his whole career.
Win-Loss Record:  165-87 !!!
ERA:  2.76 !!!
Strikeouts:  2,396  !!!

Koufax is also remembered as one of the outstanding Jewish athletes in American sport. His decision not to pitch Game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur garnered national attention as an example of conflict between social pressures and personal beliefs.

On September 9, 1965, Koufax became the sixth pitcher of the modern era to throw a perfect game, the first by a left-hander since 1880. The game was Koufax's fourth no-hitter, setting a Major League record (subsequently broken by Nolan Ryan). Koufax struck out 14 batters, the most recorded in a perfect game. The game also featured a quality performance by the opposing pitcher, Bob Hendley of the Cubs. Hendley pitched a one-hitter and allowed only two batters to reach base. Both pitchers had no-hitters intact until the seventh inning.

In one of baseball's great statistical and score-keeping anomalies, this has been the only nine-inning major league game where both teams combined for one hit. The game's only run, scored by the Dodgers, was unearned.  The Dodger run was scored without a recorded at bat—Lou Johnson walked, reached second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored when the throw to get him out at third went wild.

Koufax was the first pitcher to win multiple Cy Young Awards, as well as the first pitcher to win a Cy Young Award by a unanimous vote.  All 3 of his Cy Young Awards were by unanimous vote!  HOW RARE IS THAT??

Among NL pitchers with at least 2,000 innings pitched who have debuted since 1913, he has the highest career winning percentage (.655) and had the lowest career ERA (2.76) until surpassed by Tom Seaver, whose NL career mark is 2.73.

  • 6× All-Star selection (1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966)
  • 3× World Series champion (1959, 1963, 1965)
  • 3× Cy Young Award winner (1963, 1965, 1966)
  • 1963 NL MVP
  • 2× World Series MVP (1963, 1965)
  • 4× NL TSN Pitcher of the Year (1963, 1964, 1965, 1966)
  • 2× Babe Ruth Award (1963, 1965)
  • Pitched a perfect game on September 9, 1965
  • Los Angeles Dodgers #32 retired
  • He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, his 1st year of eligibility, with a vote of 86.87% (first ballot).

 SEAL,

Thanks or posting all that. One hell of a pitcher wasn't he and too think of his short career because of wildness early on & elbow problem that forced him to retire in his prime!!!

Thanks Jimbo

You're so very welcome.  Cherrie was wondering about a few of them. So I thought I'd post a few interesting *Fax*    He was so awesome!  Just looking at all he did is amazing!  It's so sad no one was watching out for him to keep him from such a tragic loss with his elbow!

IT REALLY COULDN'T BE HELPED...IT WAS THE WAY HIS ELBOW WAS BUILT. I WATCHED EVERY GAME OF HIM I COULD! HE WAS THE MASTER! AND I RESPECT HIM BECAUSE HE WAS A GOOD JEWISH PERSON! HE SKIPPED A WORLD SERIES START BECAUSE OF HIS BELIEFS IN HIS RELIGION!
#8 | 1400 days ago

I noted that in his *FAX* lol.  From what I read, he was really throwing his arm out early.  No one was telling him.. whoaaaaaaaaaa.  You are gona rip up your arm if ya don't knock that off.  Like these days they have so many days between pitching.  Did they have that back then?

Wow,Seal you really do your homework! thank you so much for your time and effort in putting this together, I really appreciate it. Watching the video of Koufax, I just wondered who, if anyone came close to his impressive stats. I envy those who got to see these guys play the game.

So they were and he was working with not many breaks, which didn't get to him for a while, but boy when it did.  When did they come up with that rule that pitchers had to have a certain number of days between pitching?  No worries, brat!  That'll teach ya *giggle*
#12 | 1399 days ago

Thanks Cherrie!  He is so interesting.  I'll get to Ted Williams next and when I remember who the other one is again, I'll put some interesting things in there too!  Hey we're here to learn too, yes?

There is no rule now! Not a rule! It's just standard practice!
#14 | 1397 days ago

So technically now they could play every game?  WoW  I thought it was some kind of MLB restriction or something.

SuperStar123 (+)

Nope, none, you can look it up!
#16 | 1397 days ago

I believe ya!  I just never knew.  Thank's for teaching me more!
