The Sandberg game

June 23, 1984 was one of the greatest days in Chicago Cubs history. Hall-of-Fame 2nd baseman, Ryne Sandberg, would twice homer off of Cardinals Hall-of-Fame closer, Bruce Sutter. Each home run came with two outs. The first home run happened in the bottom of the 9th and the second in extra innings. The Cubs trailed each time. Sandberg would go on to win the National League MVP in 1984.

#8 \| 140 days ago WBKsports (+)	I loved Ryne Sandberg's game...I played some 2B in my lifetime...I followed the Cubs a lot in 1984 mainly because our Padres were really successful that season. I was huge fan of Ron Cey, Gary MAtthews, and Larry Bowa...The ECK was on that team I believe. I feel bad for Cubbies fans because that was "ONE OF THOSE YEARS" they should have been in the World Series...The Padres took advantage of the 2-3 five game series format and ran the table at Home...I went crazy, I was only 12, but Ryne Sandberg was one of the best I've seen at the 2B position...

Bob Costas and Tony Kubek chroniceld Sandberg's demoiltion of the Cardinals unlike anything we can get on network t.v. today. "The Game of The Week" on NBC was simply the best baseball ever...Curt Gowdy...Joe Garagiola...Vin Scully. What was great about NBC was the World Series coverage by Gowdey, Garagiola, and Kubek. They would also bring in local tv/radio guys to help with post-season coverage. Today, baseball on Fow is a big swing and a miss...strike 3.

I was at that game 4 in Jack Murphy Stadium...I had seats somewhere in Left Field, but my family was up in the upper view level...We moved up to the top around the 8th inning to hang out with everyone...When Garvey hit the Homerun, I hugged and was being hugged by thousands of random people wearing "Cub-Busters" shirts...I've never seen so many fans in a frenzy at one time... The crazy thing about that game was that every time Garvey would come up to bat he would get a "Crucial" RBI. The game was 1-0 Padres in the 3rd when Garvey doubled in Alan Wiggins for a 2-0 lead. With the Cubs leading 3-2 in the 5th Garvey singled in Tim Flannery to put the game at 3-3. With the game tied 3-3 in the 7th, Garvey singles to LF scoring Bobby Brown 4-3 Padres lead. Then of course the Majestic shot to right field in a 5-5 tie Bottom of the 9th...Steve Garvey is probably hated by Cubs fans everywhere going 4-5 with 5 RBI's in that game... After the Game 1 Massacre in Chicago, Padres fans seemed to have lost hope, but fate was on our side just this once...Sutcliffe should have slammed the door in Game 5, but the Padres had 6 Lefties in their starting Lineup and in the 7th inning of that game Tony Gwynn had a huuuuge 2 RBI Double after Leon Durham's crucial error...Garvey singled in Gwynn for a 6-3 lead, which was enough for Goose Gossage to slam the door shut in the 8th and 9th. I listened to Game 5 on the radio while watching it on TV because Jerry Coleman was just amazing. We got crushed by the Tigers in the World Series!!! Just ask SusanVette!!!

I really miss the NBC game of the week. I don't know if it's generational, but the announcers today (most of them) are more interested in their catch-phrases than really calling the game.

Amen love the old announcers/broadcasts 'course I don't want to go back to the days of only being able to see one "out of market" game a week like it was back then..Loving me some Xtra Innings!
